What Is Virtual Memory?

Virtual memory picks up where RAM or random access memory drops off. It assists the
computer in having enough resources to perform its work.
How Does Virtual Memory Work?
Virtual memory places data that would normally be kept in RAM onto the hard drive
temporarily. Otherwise, the computer would soon run out of RAM and the ability to
function properly. High performance programs would no longer run after multiple hours on
a computer without the ability to access virtual memory.

Free and low cost Spyware scanners
There are many great spyware programs on the market, and the best part is that many of them are
free or very low cost. This makes it easy for all computer users to protect themselves against the
damage spyware and similar programs can do.
In fact it is often a good idea to run more than one anti-spyware program on the same PC or laptop.
While running more than one virus scanner is generally not recommended, anti-spyware programs
rarely conflict with one another the way virus scanning programs often do. Running two different
anti-spyware programs is a great way to maximize your protection, since the threats that are missed
by one program are often picked up by the other.
And of course it is vital to keep those programs up to date

Java errors can result from incompatible or outdated software

programs. A great place to start if you are experiencing Java and
Javascript errors is by updating your Microsoft and Java software.
Using Windows Updates you can install the latest service packs
for your operating system and you can install the latest version of
Java from the Sun Microsystems website. This will ensure that
your computer programs are compatible with the applications that
you are trying to use.
Unlike some other downloadable programs, newer Java
installations are compatible with older versions, so there is no
need to purge your system of existing software first.
However, there are a number of different Java error messages that
indicate that an installation attempt has failed. If this happens, the
manufacturer recommends that you start by removing all traces of
the failed installation from your computer to prevent interference
before trying again.

JavaScript is different from Java, and is not part of the Java

platform. JavaScript errors often result from web browser settings
that arent properly set to enable the technology. The first thing to
do to resolve these issues is ensure that your settings are set in
Internet Explorer.
1. From the menu bar at the top of the screen, choose Tools,
then Internet Options to open the dialog box
2. Choose the Security tab, and then Custom Level
3. This will open another dialog box called Security Settings
4. Scroll to Scripting of Java Applets
5. Choose Enable
6. Click OK, then OK again
If you are using the Mozilla Firefox web browser, follow these
steps:
1. From the browser menu bar at the top of the screen, choose
Tools, then Options
2. Choose Web Features
3. Check the Enable JavaScript box option
4. Click OK
If the web browser settings show that JavaScript is already
enabled, then the error is most likely in the code of the application
that you are trying to run, In this case, there isnt anything that you
can do to resolve the issue, other than contacting the creator and
reporting the error. You can, however, stop the error messages
from displaying on your computer by adjusting your Web
browsers script debugging settings. Go to Tools > Internet
Options > Advanced > Browsing and find the two options
addressing script debugging. One is for disabling script debugging

DLL files you are running that need SVCHOST support this
format is a favorite among hackers and malware writers who hope
that the program will go unnoticed in your system. It is important
to update your security software definitions and then run complete
scans to eliminate any problems.

18.
19.
20.

Once you are sure that a virus isnt responsible for the error, you
should make sure that your Windows operating system software is
up to date with the latest releases. Using Windows Updates you
can download and install the latest issues from Microsoft to sync
your system with the latest releases and to get any recent patches
released to deal with vulnerabilities in the software.
A common SVCHOST error occurs when any one process is using
99 or 100 percent of your computers CPU. A lot of the time this
message is related to massive operations by Microsoft Updates.
You have the option of turning this service off and using Windows
Updates instead, or making manual selections for your updates,
but they are important and shouldnt be overlooked.
There is also a hotfix available from Microsoft, but many users
report that it doesnt resolve the issue. To make the change:
Click the Start button, then All Programs
Choose Windows Update
This will open a Microsoft Windows Update dialog
window choose Change Settings
Remove the check to disable the Microsoft Update option
regardless of the warnings
Complete the uninstall process, then use Windows Updates
to keep your computer current and secure
SVCHOST errors are tough to solve in that its hard for average
computer users to distinguish between legitimate Windows
SVCHOST processes and malware pretending to be a SVCHOST
file. To make it even more confusing, many instances of
SVCHOST.exe can be running at once in Task Manager. If you
see one that is using an excessive amount of system resources,
trying to figure out which actual program is responsible is a
difficult task, often involving trial and error. Keeping your system
protected, maintained, and patched with the latest updates are

Your computers hard drive is susceptible to a number of

errors
In addition, it can be the source of problems that lead to common
computer problems such as slow performance. Keeping your hard
drive in tiptop shape helps protect its data while also preventing
sluggish performance and other related computer problems. One
of the must-do preventative maintenance steps involves
defragmenting the hard drive.
When a hard drive is fragmented, its files are broken into many
pieces and scattered all over the hard drive. Windows takes far
longer to access fragmented files than when the drive is neat and

defragment process takes fragmented file pieces, puts them back
together, and realigns them on the hard drive so that Windows can
quickly retrieve required files without having to piece the
fragments back into a usable file.

A good analogy is a set of encyclopedias. Normally, a set is stored

on a self in order, from A-Z. You know exactly where each book
is. But what if each book is scattered all over your house? It takes
a lot longer to find what you need when the set is broken up like
this. A little housekeeping and efficiency is restored. The same is
true of fragmented files.

with the defragmenter. Plan on not using your computer during
defragmenting as operations can stop the defragmenter, causing it Cyber hackers
to start all over from the beginning. This is especially true for
Windows XP systems. Improvements to the Disk Defragmenter
tool have been made for Windows Vista where you can use the
computer during defragging.
The disk defrag tool is located in the Systems Tools folder. Go
to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk
Defragmenter. If you have Windows Vista, you have the option to
run Disk Defragmenter on a regular schedule which is highly
recommended. Go ahead and schedule weekly defragmenting by
placing a check mark in the Run on a schedule box and clicking
the Modify Schedule button. Choose how often, what day, and
what time and then confirm your choices by clicking OK.
3. Click the Defragment Now (Vista) or Defragment (XP) button
and select the disks for defragmentation.
4. If you have Windows Vista, you wont see much other than a
status message that says, Defragmenting hard disk. Windows
XP users will see a graph with two bars representing the before
and after disk usage and fragmentation. The before bar will
show color coded files scattered across the bar while the after
bar will continuously update showing how the files are being

moved and realigned. At the end of the defragmentation process,

the after bar will be dramatically better organized with
contiguous files neatly organized on the left side and white space
representing free disk space on the right.
Depending on the fragmentation, the entire process can take
several hours. A severely fragmented drive will take much longer
to defragment than one with little fragmentation. After the
defragmentation process completes, you should notice improved
operating system performance.

The more we use our computers, the more we install programs. As time
goes by, we realize that some programs simply arent what we
expected and we either stop using them or uninstall them. Most of the
time, uninstalling programs is painless. We simply click Uninstall and
follow the prompts. However, every now and then, uninstalling a
program causes computer errors.
Common uninstalled program errors include DLL not found errors,
Program in use errors, and other unusual problems such as system
freezes, printer or device failure, and strange warning messages. For
example, if the uninstalled program was previously set to load at
startup, you might see a message telling you that the program or one of
its components couldnt be found.
So, what do you do when your computer generates uninstalled program
errors? How do you know that the errors you are receiving are related
to the uninstalled program? The first step is to consider when the
computer errors began and what types of changes you made to your
computer around that time. If you uninstalled a program yesterday and
today your computer is acting up, theres a good chance that the errors
are due to the uninstallation.
In cases where you have pinpointed the uninstalled program, you have

two do-it-yourself options: System Restore and reinstalling the

program. If you have a good System Restore point from before the
failed uninstallation, roll your computer back to that time. Your
software and related settings will return and your computer will be
happy once again. To use System Restore, go to Start > Programs >
Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. Choose a restore point
as close to the uninstallation as possible so that you dont lose other
system settings and updates. Keep in mind that if you select a restore
point too far back in time, you will need to reapply system and
antivirus updates and reinstall any software or hardware installed since
that point.
Reinstalling the previously uninstalled software is also effective in
solving uninstalled program errors. After all, if the uninstaller removed
the softwares DLL files and another program needs them, reinstalling
the program will reinstall those files. Uninstallers are notorious for
prompting users to remove no longer needed shared system files.
This is one of the most common uninstalled program related computer
errors there is. If you clicked OK to this prompt, reinstalling the
software and then uninstalling without allowing the removal of the
shared system files should solve the computer error.
Finally, some uninstall programs only partially uninstall the program,
leaving behind registry entries and empty folders. While you can safely
delete empty program folders, use extreme care when attempting to
clean out the registry values. Only advanced users should attempt such
a cleaning on their own.
Uninstall program errors are unfortunate because you are trying to keep
your computer running well by clearing out unwanted programs. Its
smart to set a System Restore point before attempting an uninstall and
monitoring the computers behavior afterwards.

The Windows hourglass. The Windows spinning wheel. No matter
which form appears on your monitor, if the hourglass or spinner
refuses to budge, youve got a not responding error. These icons are
meant to tell you that Windows is busy. Most of the time, they last a
second or two and you are able to resume your tasks. But when they
dont, Windows is stuck and youll likely see a message box that
further enlightens you with a message saying that Windows or the
program is not responding.
You can manually fix not responding errors; however, the steps depend
on whats not responding and the overall condition of the computer
system. For example, if you consistently receive not responding errors
with a particular program, youll want to focus on the program itself
first. On the other hand, if a variety of programs stop responding, your

system is likely low on resources and your repairs should focus on

freeing system resources.
Using the Task Manager
The Task Manager is a built-in tool that is useful when not responding
errors occur. If you can get the Task Manager to open, you can then
close the non-responsive program and avoid a full system crash. The
Control + Alt + Delete key combination will launch Task Manager.
From there, select the non-responsive program and click End Task.
Troubleshooting Program-Related Not Responding Errors
If a single program consistently freezes, think about whether this is a
new or recurring problem. If new, what changes have you made lately?
Have you downloaded a new program or installed new hardware? If so,
consider uninstalling the new addition to see if the new software has
interfered with your program.
If the software comes with a repair tool, try repairing it. For example,
Microsoft Office comes with built-in repair tools that you can access
from outside the software. Updating software with the latest patches
and hotfixes from its vendor is also effective at repairing known bugs
and errors.
Troubleshooting System-wide Not Responding Errors
Computers that are low on disk space, CPU power, and memory often
generate not responding errors. Use the Task Manager to see where
your system is struggling. Once launched, click the Performance tab
and look at the graphs. What percentage of your CPU Usage is in use?
How much free memory is available?
If the CPU usage is in the high 90 percent range, youre asking your
computer to do too much at once. This is usually related to having too
many programs open at once or using a program (such as video editing
software) that requires extensive processing power. This is also true
when Task Manager shows that you do not have much available RAM.
In addition, your hard drive may be nearing capacity.
To deal with the overabundance of programs, run a complete virus and
spyware scan to rule out hidden, resource-gobbling programs. From
there, go to Start > Run and type in MSCONFIG. Go to the Startup tab
and remove unnecessary programs from the startup list.
Finally, go to My Computer and right-click your hard drive. Choose
Properties and run the Disk Cleanup tool, especially if it looks like

CHKDSK.exe, which is a command line utility built into Windows,
stands for Check Disk. According to Microsoft, CHKDSK is used
for verifying the logical integrity of Windows file systems. If
CHKDSK is not in read-only mode and it finds inconsistencies, it will
attempt to repair the file system data. In addition to checking file
systems, CHKDSK also checks and repairs hard drive errors related to
bad sectors and lost clusters.
The CHKDSK process can take anywhere from a few minutes to hours
depending on the number of files and directories that must be checked,
the state and level of fragmentation of the volume being checked, and
how much corruption exists. The computers resources, or lack of
resources, also affect how long CHKDSK runs.
While CHKDSK is a useful tool that repairs volumes, it also can create
problems of its own. For example, if your computer crashes or is shut
down improperly, CHKDSK may be programmed to run upon the next
boot up. While the tool is running, it needs exclusive access to the hard

drive which means that you cant use your computer during CHKDSK
error-checking. If this happens frequently, you may not have access to
your computer for several hours, several times per week.
As you can imagine, frequent error checking, especially if launched
automatically because of underlying computer errors is far from
desirable. Rather than allowing CHKDSK to run regularly, its smarter
to fix the underlying problem. For instance, if CHKDSK errors are
related to unexpected shutdowns, focus on finding out why your
computer is shutting down incorrectly. Is the power cord securely
attached? Is the electrical outlet faulty? Is the computers power supply
failing? Do all users understand how to turn off the computer?
If CHKDSK runs at every boot up or when shutting down, two
possible culprits should be checked: Scheduled Tasks and failing
hardware. The Scheduled Task utility is useful for scheduling computer
maintenance tasks for times when you dont need your computer as
well as ensuring that preventative maintenance takes place regularly.
However, if CHKDSK is scheduled here, it may be excessive and
annoying, especially because of the exclusive needs and time demands
of CHKDSK. Its worth checking to be sure that CHKDSK isnt overly
scheduled. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools >
Scheduled Tasks. Look for either Autochk or CHKDSK in the list.
Click Delete this item under Folder Tasks.
In addition, users who want to turn off Autochk, which is closely
related to CHKDSK by modifying the Windows registry. Set a System
Restore point prior to modifying the registry and use these instructions
at your own risk:
Open the registry editor by going to Start > Run and entering regedit.
Click OK. Navigate to the following registry entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control
\Session Manager\BootExecute
Click the entry to select it and go to Edit > Modify. Type in the
following and press Enter:
autocheck autochk *
Finally, if you have massive CHKDSK errors, consider the possibility
that your hard drive may be failing. Look for warning signs such as
additional error messages, file corruption, and mysterious noises and
clicks. Dont forget to back up your data frequently in case the drive
crashes and takes your data with it.

Microsofts ActiveX technology usually involves plug-ins which are
extensions that add functionality to the Internet Explorer Web browser.
When the ActiveX plug-in is well written by a reputable provider, the
Web browsing experience is enhanced. For example, ActiveX controls
allow for multimedia playback, PDF document viewing, and other
features that the browser would otherwise be incapable of. On the other
hand, poorly written ActiveX controls can cause ActiveX errors. Even
worse, hackers and malware makers have exploited ActiveX
technology to carry out their devious deeds.
The most common types of ActiveX errors are related to ActiveX
browser settings, ActiveX conflicts, poorly written ActiveX controls,
and malicious ActiveX controls. If your computer is generating
ActiveX errors, you must first identify the type of ActiveX error you
are receiving: ActiveX browser issue, ActiveX conflict, or malware.
Once you know the general nature of the ActiveX error, you can take
matters into your own hands and fix it.

How to fix ActiveX Errors

Because of malicious ActiveX controls, Internet Explorers security

settings are generally set to provide a level of protection against them.
However, the settings may be set either too high or too low. If the
settings are set too high, your browser may be restricted from carrying
out legitimate functions such as downloading bank statements from
your bank. If they are set too low, malicious scripts could run without
your knowledge. Finding the right balance is key in both solving and
preventing ActiveX errors.

18.
19.
20.
21.

Launch your Web browser and click Tools > Internet Options. Click
the Security tab, highlight the Internet globe, and click on Custom
Level. Find the ActiveX Controls and Plug-ins category and make sure
that both Script Active X controls marked safe for scripting and
Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins are marked enabled. All other
ActiveX options should be marked prompt.

ActiveX Conflicts
Occasionally, an ActiveX control will cause conflicts with other
programs or fail to live up to expectations. Internet Explorer comes
with an Add-on manager where you can view, manage, and disable
installed ActiveX controls. Go to Tools > Manage Add-ons. Click
Toolbars and Extensions and find the troublesome control in the list.
Once highlighted, you can view detailed information about the
ActiveX control as well as disable it.
If your Internet Explorer Web browser is malfunctioning, it could be
the result of an ActiveX error. Another technique used to pinpoint the
offending ActiveX control is to run Internet Explorer without Add-ons
and then re-enable the ActiveX controls one-by-one until the problem
reappears. Once the conflicting control is identified, you can then
disable it using the Manage Add-ons tool. To run Internet Explorer
without add-ons, go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools
> Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

ActiveX Malware
Malicious ActiveX controls are best prevented by setting the Web
browser appropriately and using common sense when prompted to
install questionable controls. A good computer security program
provides a second layer of defense, especially if real-time blocking and
regular scans are enabled.

Malicious ActiveX controls may also create registry entries that cause
additional computer errors. These registry changes are best handled by
registry cleaning utilities as manual registry cleaning is time
consuming, challenging, and highly risky.
ActiveX controls can be either extremely useful or extremely
damaging. Use care when accepting ActiveX controls and only accept
them from trusted sites. In short, prevention is the best policy.

How to Clean and Maintain Your Computer

Cleaning the Computer

First, clean the exterior using lint-free, static-free cloths. If you need to remove stubborn
stains, you can use a slightly damp cloth and a little rubbing alcohol. Clean the monitor or
LCD screen, the keyboard and the case. Use canned air to blow off dust and dirt from the
outside. Make sure any vents are clear of dust and debris so that air can flow freely and
keep the system from overheating.
If you want to clean the inside, make sure you disconnect the power supply and watch for
static either by touching the outside of the case or wearing an antistatic wrist strap. Even a
little static can severely damage the components. Blow dust off of any fans you can see
with compressed air and use antistatic wipes to remove any dust inside the case without
touching any circuitry. Check the power cables and the CMOS battery (usually a round,
watch-type battery) if it is more than five years old.
Computer Maintenance
Just as you clean up the outside, you should clean up the programs and components of the
system. These are some things you can do to make sure the computer runs smoothly
without slowing down:
1. Delete files and programs. If you have old files or programs you no longer use,
delete them, and then empty the Recycle Bin (as long as you are sure you are not
going to use them again).
2. Clean the registry. It is best to use a registry cleaning program to remove any
leftover system components that can be left when adding or removing programs.

3. Run CHKDSK. This will scan the hard drive and check volumes for problems. Go to

Start and then Run. Type in: cmd and press Enter. In the box, type in: chkdsk and
press Enter.
4. Defrag. After a while, the hard drive can be full of fragments of files that have been
broken up and are now spread over many locations in your computer. Getting those
files back in order can make the system run much faster. Close all programs and
make sure the power supply wont be interrupted. Go to Start and then Programs.
Find Accessories and System Tools and then Disk Defragmentation. Choose
Analyze the system will tell you if you need to go on to defrag the system. If you
do run the disk defragmentation, it may take an hour or so to complete.
5. Run your antivirus software. This is a good time to take a look at your antimalware
programs, keep them updated and let them run.
6. Backup. Make sure all of your files are backed up, either to an external drive or by
using an online service to store your files.
Taking a few minutes every few months to clean up the computer both inside and out can
keep your equipment in top shape and help you avoid a system disaster.

The presence of spyware and/or viruses can really slow down the speed of your

Internet bandwidth. Run a good up-to-date anti-spyware/anti-virus application and
remove any of these malware types if they exist.
