PLATES AND SHELLS
Coursework II worth 20% Deadline: 19/03/2015

An underwater structure with a uniform thickness is composed of multiple segments of


shells: spherical with radius R, a conical and a cylindrical part, as shown in Figure 1.
The figure shows all relevant geometric dimensions. The structure is subject to water
pressure (specific weight ) as well as own weight defined by q (force/shell surface).
(a) Modify and improve the design as you see fit without altering the basic geometry
of the structure.
(b) For the loading case of water pressure together with the own weight determine for
the spherical part only the meridian force.
(c) In case your design modifications have added structural elements, determine for
these the resultant internal forces (ring forces) as well.
(d)

Calculate the horizontal displacement in the middle of the cylindrical section.
