    Imaginerainfallingonaforestwithdensevegetation.Thewaterisslowedandabsorbed,anditreaches
    thenearbystreamlittlebylittle.Nowpicturerainfallinginapavementfilledcity.Thewatergushes
    intothestream,causingittoflood.
    Inthisexperiment,youwillinvestigatewhathappenswhenrainfallsondifferentlandsurfacesintheBay
    watershed.Asyoutestdifferentmaterials,thinkabouthowtodeviseawaytoslowdowntherunoff.
    Procedure
    1. Setuptheexperimentasindicatedinthediagram.
    2. Inthepredictioncolumn,predictwhichofthematerialswillproducethefastestrunoffandwhich
    willproducethemostrunoff.Rankthematerialsfrom1(fastest/most)to6(slowest/least).
    3. Measure100mLofwaterinagraduatedcylinder.
    4. Gentlypourthewaterfromthegraduatedcylinderintotheemptycarton.Begintimingassoonas
    youbegintopourthewater.Stoptimingwhenyouhavecollectedalloftherunoff.Transferthe
    runofftothegraduatedcylinderandmeasuretheamount.Recordthisinformationinthedatatable.
    5. Now,addoneofyourtestmaterialstothecarton.Measurethethicknessofthismaterial,anduse
    thisthicknessforallofthematerials.
    6. Repeatstep#3.
    7. Repeatstep#4.Thistime,stoptimingafter45seconds.After45seconds,liftthecartonuptostop
    therunoff.Transfertherunofftothegraduatedcylinder,measure,andrecord.Examinetherunoff
    andrecordhowmurkyitappears.
    8. Repeattheseproceduresforeachtestmaterialandrecordyourresults.
