EXPERIENCES
(include learner diversity)

Motivation- Students watch a video on the story of The

Little Refugee by Anh Do and Suzanne Do. This will give
the students an understanding of immigration through
the eyes of a child. It is presented in storybook format.
Activity- Students open up Spiderscribe and log in.
Students will be required to; choose two countries to
focus their Spiderscribe on, for each country they will be
required to research and present information on; the
number of immigrants per year, the cultural differences
between the two countries, length of the journey, photos
from the county of origin (at least 5), at least 5 cultural
differences (food, language, dress, customs). Students
post their Spiderscribe onto their Kidblog.
Closure- Students view other Spiderscribes from other
students via Kidblog and must comment on 1 other
students Spiderscribe.
Extension-Students are required to choose a country
with a lower immigration rate to Australia.
Enabling-Students access a lower literacy level in
Britannica. Stand for iPad if requiring physical
assistance.
Motivation- Show the book The Arrival to demonstrate
how meaning can be generated from texts without
words.

Activity- Students use Britannica to collect images from

both their chosen country and of Australia. The images
are saved in the Photos App of the iPads. The students
use Pic Collage to make a textless story to depict the
journey from their chosen country through to the arrival
in Australia.
Closure- Students upload their work to their Kidblog and
comment on 3 other collages, giving their interpretation
of what is going on in the depiction.
Extension-Students can enhance their collage by adding
more photos to their collage and demonstrating a clear
beginning, middle and end.
Enabling- In lieu of finding all the images on Britannica,
the student may use the camera facility to show facial
expressions.
Motivation- Ask a member of the school community, who
has immigrated to Australia, to come in to speak to the
students about their first day of arrival in our country.
Activity- Students write a narrative blog from the
perspective of a Year 5 student. The blog will be about
their experiences on their first day. They will need to
include comment on cultural differences, including; food,
language, clothing, customs and smell. They will need to
edit their own work and have one other class member
check their work before publishing.
Students will construct an iMovie trailer. This trailer will
be embedded into their blog after their narrative blog.
The trailer will show a brief overview of the content of
their narrative. It will contain pictures, appropriate music
and video of themselves describing the narrative.
Closure- Students will then view at least 5 other student
trailers and comment on each on the Kidblog.
Extension- Trailer will contain some of the narrative print
Enabling-Teacher and educational assistants aid
students with different needs.
Motivation-Students are introduced to abcya.com on the
interactive whiteboard and in turns complete the World
Geography Task.
Activity-Students are asked to visualise
sounds/smells/language differences between their
country of research and Australia. Students then use
Comic Life to construct a 1 comic page which represents
the first day in Australia of an Immigrant.
ClosureExtension- Students are asked to construct a second
page of their comic, using narrative text.
Enabling- The student can construct a comic that is
