6 Reasons To Avoid Processed Foods

6 REASONS TO AVOID
PROCESSED FOODS
If you went to 10 different stores and bought a "Snickers" Bar at each one, and then you went home and lined all of
them up side-by-side they would all look exactly the same, and they would also taste exactly the same as well. (Even if
they were made in 10 different factories and on 10 very different dates.) Stay away these kinds of foods, they are highly
processed to maintain their consistent look and taste and it isn't safe to eat them. On the other hand, if you picked 10
apples from the exact same apple tree and you lined all of them up side-by-side you would have 10 different apples.
Some of them would be bigger, some would be smaller, and they would all vary at least slightly in color, shape, and
taste. Stick with foods that are different each time you eat them.

1. TOO MANY RANDOM INGREDIENTS

Below is an example of a common Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner in the Standard American Diet (S.A.D.) and below that
is a list of all of the ingredients that are listed in the processed versions of these foods from some of the most popular
name brands. (The spell checker that I used didn't even recognize a lot of these ingredients and it's highly unlikely that
your body will recognize or know what to do with a lot of these unnatural ingredients either...)

2. THEY WILL RUIN YOUR TASTE BUDS
If you have spent the past 5, 10, 15, or 20 years eating processed foods that are loaded with artificial flavorings and
spices and that contain excessive amounts of added sugar, salt, and fat your taste buds are going to be desensitized
due to all of the years of unnatural stimulation that they have become accustomed (and addicted) to and they will no
longer be sensitive enough to fully appreciate the taste of natural foods like fruits and vegetables.
Our taste buds are designed to seek out sweet, salty, and fatty flavors and processed food companies take advantage
of this by making their products as unnaturally sweet, salty, and fatty as possible, and they spend millions of dollars on
research to discover ways to make their products taste so addicting that people will crave and buy their products over

and over again.

What's ironic is that most processed foods (like "Chicken Nuggets" for example) are so processed that they would
literally taste like cardboard if it were not for the addictive and artificial flavorings that are added to them in order to keep
people wanting to eat these otherwise tasteless and harmful foods.
The good news is that the taste buds in your mouth have a life span of only about 2 weeks so if you can simply stop
bombarding your taste buds with artificial stimulation your taste buds will start to heal and become a lot more sensitive,
and as they become more sensitive the following 3 changes will occur...
- You will really start to notice the sugary taste of sweet fruits.
- You will really start to notice the salty taste of sodium rich vegetables.
- You will really start to notice the fatty taste and texture of avocados, nuts, & seeds.
As you become more and more aware of the sugary, salty, and fatty tastes that are found in natural foods your desire to
seek out sugary, salty, and fatty junk foods will begin to fade and will eventually be nonexistent.

3. NO LOVE WAS ADDED
I remember days when I was a child where I would come home from school and as soon as I walked in the front door my
Mom would be in the kitchen making bread, and the whole house would smell like fresh homemade bread, but when I
became an adult and moved out on my own I quickly learned that a loaf of "Wonder Bread" isn't going to give you that
experience at all.
Many adults swear that their mom's home cooking is still the best food that they have ever eaten. (Even if the actual
ingredients that their moms used were nothing special, and even if their moms admit that they don't even know that
much about cooking.) The reason that so many people prefer their mom's home cooking over all other foods is
because it was made specifically for them by someone who loves and cares about them.
Processed foods are made with greed, not love, and they certainly aren't made by companies who have your health and
well being in mind when they prepare it. (In most cases processed foods are prepared by unconscious machines or by
people who hate their jobs, and in some cases by slave labor.)
A while back a married couple told me that the best meal they ever ate was when their 4 year old son made them
breakfast in bed. They told me how adorable it was that there were little holes in the toast from where his little fingers
had pressed down on it too hard, and how he put way too much jam on the toast, and how his face was covered with jam
when he brought it to them. (I thought that it was a really cute story, but in the back of my mind I couldn't help but
wonder just how different their reaction would have been if they were given a meal just like that at a restaurant.)
It might sound a bit esoteric to some, but adding love to food really does make a huge difference, and so does feeling
love while you eat a meal. An easy example of this would be to imagine that 2 different families eat the exact same meal
for dinner, and in one house the family is talking, laughing, and enjoying their meal and their time together, but in the
other house the family members are all yelling and arguing with each other while they eat.
Our bodies have a much harder time digesting food when we are feeling bad emotionally and this is the reason why
even if you are really hungry you will immediately lose your appetite if you get a phone call from the bank telling you that
some important checks that you wrote just bounced or from a hospital telling you that a loved one is in the emergency
room. When your body is under a lot of emotional stress the last thing that it wants is a big meal to have to digest, so if
you are experiencing high amounts of stress your body will purposely block the hunger signals from reaching your brain
to prevent you from wanting to eat anything in extremely stressful times.
Processed foods however are often referred to as "comfort foods" because they require so much energy to digest that
you are left with little energy to think about your problems or do something about them, so when people are feeling bad
and they don't want to face their problems they reach for their favorite "comfort food" because it will act as a "pain killer".
(Do you feel sad because your boyfriend broke up with you? Eat a big bowl of ice cream to suppress your sadness!)
The biggest problem with all this is that rather than listening to the body's request to stop eating during times of great

distress and to deal with the problem immediately people will actually overeat and try to ignore their problems which in
the long run will of course make things a lot worse.

4. MISLEADING HEALTH CLAIMS
Just because the brand name of a frozen dinner is "Healthy Choice" it doesn't mean that it is going to be healthy. If you
are going to buy processed food you need to be paying far more attention to the ingredient list than the brand name or
the picture on the front of the box, can, jar, or bag...
More and more people are starting to become health conscientious and virtually all processed food companies are
coming out with health claims that are specifically designed to get these people to buy their product and below are some
common health claims that you have probably seen on various processed food labels...

COMMON HEALTH CLAIMS FOUND ON PROCESSED FOOD LABELS

"Low in Fat"
"Low in Sugar"
"Low in Sodium"
"Low in Calories"

"High in Calcium"
"High in Vitamin C"
"High in Antioxidants"
"High in Dietary Fiber"

"No Trans Fat"

"No Cholesterol"
"No Added MSG"
"No Preservatives"

"May Help Reduce Your Risk of Cancer"

"May Help Reduce Your Risk of Diabetes"
"May Help Reduce Your Risk of Heart Disease"
"May Help Reduce Your Risk of High Blood Pressure"

Did you know that EVERY SINGLE ONE of the health claims listed above could be put on something like broccoli? But
you don't see health claims like these on things like broccoli do you? Instead processed food companies will take 1 of
these claims such as "Low in Fat" and put it on a box of microwave popcorn and this gives people the impression that
they are getting a healthy product, when in reality they aren't.
Another big problem is that processed food companies will often not list every single ingredient that is used in their
product, (If they did list every single ingredient many ingredient lists would have hundreds of ingredients.) and they get
away with this by either taking several ingredients and calling them 1 generic name (like "artificial flavors" which could
represent 2 or 2 dozen separate ingredients) or they will make up new and complex sounding names for ingredients that
they don't want people to know are in their product...
Below is a list that I have compiled of 100 different ingredients that are actually sugar in disguise or that contain sugar.
Sugar is added to almost all processed foods, (It's even in most canned vegetables.) and a lot of people try to avoid
products with added sugar, but the average person doesn't realize that all of the following ingredients means "sugar"...

5. PROCESSED FOODS ARE JUST AS ADDICTING AND HARMFUL AS DRUGS, ALCOHOL, AND CIGARETTES
In the film "Super Size Me" one of the most interesting parts to me was when the man in the film said that when he was
eating McDonald's food he would feel really good, but then shortly after the meal he would start to feel depressed and
withdrawn for no apparent reason and he would continue to feel that way until he started eating the McDonald's food
again at which point he would instantly feel good again. (If that's not a drug I don't know what is.)
If you currently eat processed foods and you feel that comparing them to drugs is a bit of an exaggeration, simply
remove ALL processed foods from your diet and see if after a few days you don't start to experience intense cravings
for these foods, and then intense headaches, mood swings, and fatigue that you feel would all go away if you could
simply eat one of the processed foods that you enjoy.
Recently I was talking to a woman about the benefits of eating a raw food diet and she told me, "You don't understand, I
would die if I could never eat "Eggo Waffles" again!" I had to laugh when she said it, but the sad truth is that she wasn't
trying to be funny. Processed foods are designed to be so addicting that once you are addicted to them it's hard to
even imagine being able to live without them.
Recently I heard a true story about a man in America that became so overweight that he could no longer fit through the
front door of his house and he was trapped inside, so fire fighters ended up having to come to his house and tear down
a wall just to get him out. On the other side of the world children in Africa die everyday due to starvation, but what's
interesting about all this is that the starving children in Africa and the overweight man in America who could no longer
even fit through his front door are actually both suffering from the same problem. (Malnutrition) The starving children in
Africa are malnutritioned because they aren't getting enough to eat and the overweight man in America is malnutritioned
because the food that he is eating is almost all empty calorie foods so no matter how much he would eat he would just
feel hungry again an hour or two later, and as crazy as it sounds, even though the man weighed over 1,000 pounds his
body was starving! (This is the only time in human history when we are both over-eating and under-nourished at the
same time.)
The worst example of how destructive a diet of processed foods can be is in today's youth. It's disturbing to me to know
that there are children in Kindergarten that already weigh more than I do. When I was in Kindergarten there was only
one overweight kid in the whole class, but now when I see groups of young kids at a school bus stop I notice that half or
more of them are usually overweight.
It's hard enough for most adults to eat healthy, (A lot of adults have told me that the diet that I'm recommending in this
chapter is "too hard" for them.) but children can only eat what they are being fed and if they are being fed junk at home
and even at school what chance do they have of growing up to be healthy adults? (Recently I saw a mother with a baby
that wasn't even 1 year old yet and the mother was putting Pepsi in her infant's baby bottle!)
It's during the first 18 years of a person's life that they go through the most important phases of physical growth that
they are ever going to go through. Their bones are growing, their brains are developing, their hormones are forming,
and if they aren't getting the nutrition that they desperately need during this time, and on top of that they are consuming
chemicals that are highly dangerous and have no place in the human body their growth is going to be hindered in a very
negative way. (This is why diseases that used to only be found in people who are in their 50's or older are now starting
to be found in children.)
In my opinion more than 80% of the parents in America are poisoning their own children! They aren't doing this on
purpose of course. Parents love their children and want what's best for them, but feeding them foods that have been
shown to cause cancer is poisoning them nonetheless. (Maybe instead of saving money towards their child's college
education parents should be saving money towards their child's future medical bills.)

It's not all the parent's fault either. Famous football, basketball, and baseball players that children look up to, as well as
famous movie stars and pop singers get paid millions of dollars to do TV commercials that advertise sodas, candy bars,
and other junk foods to young children.
Parents are also strongly discouraged by doctors, society, and even the law to raise their children on any kind of health
based diet and the discrimination is easy to see...
- If I was raising a little girl on a vegetarian, vegan, or raw food diet and doctors examined her and found that she was
underweight or malnutrioned in anyway and they knew about the diet I was raising her on, by law they could legally take
my child away from me and put me in jail for "child abuse", and if this happened it would most likely be all over the news
and be used to scare other parents into believing that these kinds of diets are dangerous.
- If I was raising 6 kids on fast food, soda pop, and other junk foods and every single one of them was overweight and
suffering from type 2 diabetes and attention deficit disorder it is unlikely that anything would be said or done about it.
(There are families like that in my neighborhood and nobody says anything because it's so common that it's viewed as
"normal".)

6. ELIMINATING PROCESSED FOODS WILL SAVE YOU A LOT OF TIME AND MONEY IN THE FUTURE
People have come up with a lot of excuses why they can't eat healthy, and without a doubt the most common reasons
that I hear people use is that they don't have enough time or money to eat healthy. What's ironic about this is that
although processed foods can appear to be convenient and inexpensive you will actually save yourself more time and
money in the long run if you choose to eat healthier...
How Eating Healthier Can Save You Time In The Long Run...
It's true that it would take less time to put a store-bought frozen dinner in a microwave for 10 minutes than it would take
to prepare the same meal yourself using fresh ingredients, but one of the benefits of eating healthier is a longer life,
(maybe even decades longer) which should more than make up for any "lost time" that you spend in the kitchen.
How Eating Healthier Can Save You Money In The Long Run...
It's true that a bag of apples will probably cost more money than a bag of potato chips in most stores, but before you
view that as a rip-off, doesn't it make since that it would cost more for foods that are healthy than for foods that are
unhealthy and that can cause health problems?
- It makes since that you would have to spend more money on front row tickets than on tickets 100 rows back.
- It makes since that you would have to spend more money on a new car than on an old car with 100,000 miles.
- It makes since that you would have to spend more money on a 100 inch TV than on a TV that's only 12 inches.
Maybe it would help if you looked at the food that you buy as an investment in your health. Below is a list of some
common medical procedures and what their average costs are in America, so if money is an issue please consider the
all of the money that you likely won't have to spend later in life if you take better care of yourself now...
