Strength of Materials (ME 202)
Batch S1 (2014-15) Sh. No. 7
Tutorial on Deflection of beams (Solve by using singularity functions, or method of
superposition, or Castiglianos theorem, except where the method is explicitly mentioned)
1. A right angled frame with arms of sizes l and 0.5l is fixed at one end of the longer arm like a
cantilever. The other end is subjected to a moment Mo (anticlockwise). The long arm is oriented
horizontally. Calculate the horizontal deflection at the end where the moment is acting. Use
modulus of rigidity of the beam section as EI.
2. The two systems are shown in (Fig.Prob. 2) are identical in every respect except in (a) there
are two beams of length L, while in (b) there is single beam of length 2L. The uniformly
distributed load of intensity W is the same in both cases. Compare
a) The reactions at the central support
b) The maximum bending moments
c) The maximum deflections
in the two cases.
3. A flywheel is mounted on a simply supported shaft (Fig.Prob.3). The flywheel transmits
power to a clutch, which is brought in engagement by a single spring as shown. The spring
centerline is at a distance 70mm from the shaft centre. The spring force is 500N in engagement.
Determine the deflection and slope of the shaft at the location of the clutch.
4. By using Castingliano's theorem find the deflection at the end of the cantilever beam shown
in (Fig. Prob.4).
5. A Pair of round steel rods 12mm in diameter are welded together at right angles at B and built
into the wall at A. The other end is pined to an object that moves horizontally to the right by an
amount. What is the maximum stress setup in the rod, if =12mm and L=150mm ( Fig. Prob. 5),
E(Steel)= 200GPa.
