Colleen's career perspective I chose Sussex because | studied here as a visiting student during the third year of my undergraduate degree. | enjoyed the School of Education and Social Work and the atmosphere of Brighton so much, “There was a number of highlights of the course. The first term was really exciting as it was all new = we got to interact a lot with the other students and were taught by experts in a variety of fields, The course's interdisciplinarty allowed us to engage with different types of materials and subject matters, and in addition we went on a few very interesting trips to organisations like the Kids Company. ‘Another highlight would be the dissertation. While it was an incredibly challenging and difficult time, it was also exciting because | was able to conduct my own research, learning and writing about something that was important to me, ‘Having done the MA in Childhood and Youth Studies, | believe that I could do a very good job in any area involving children and young people. The course has helped me think about things differently, and has made me more aware of some of the issues children and young people face. ‘I think the direction and teaching provided at Sussex were exactly what I needed to help me refocus and evaluate what | wanted to do with my life, Overall it was a good move for me because it forced me to change my thinking in many ways, ‘I couldn't recommend Sussex or this course highly enough.’ Colleen Dolan MA in Childhood and Youth Studies toria's student perspective ‘Thave been studying the MA in Childhood and Youth Studies part-time while also working in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets as a Leaming Mentor and training other mentors. | have enjoyed the course enormously and it has far exceeded my expectations. ‘My initial reason for taking the MA was a pure interest in both the subject and the challenge of ‘working within a discipline new to me. | was attracted by the interdisciplinary nature of the course, which is definitely its main strength — there were lectures on all kinds of areas involving children and young people. Within this we were offered the freedom to follow any particular interest while stil {gaining the necessary background from all other angles. ‘became drawn to the concept of ‘children’s voice’, which impacted positively on my own teaching practice. Consequently | was commissioned to carry out a research project on the topic at a primary school in Tower Hamlets, and more recently in Brighton and Hove. “The course brought together students from all kinds of backgrounds which broadened discussions. Some of the best, experiences of the course were undoubtedly the group work, as well as trips to the educational department of the National Theatre in London.” Victoria Sheridan MA in Childhood and Youth Studies bipakwunw sussex. uk'studyg/20totaugh4s02'91571 so 2132015 MA in Childhood and Youth tutes : Childhood and youth ste: : Sty with us: University of Sussex To find out more, visit Careers and alumni (www.sussex.ac.uk/study/pg/careersandalumni) bipakwunw sussex. uk'studyg/20totaugh4s02'91571 wa 2132015 MA in Childhood and Youth tutes : Childhood and youth ste: : Sty with us: University of Sussex School and contacts Contact us Course Co-ordinator, Essex House, University of Sussex, Falmer, Brighton BN1 9QQ, UK T #44 (0)1273 872595 F #44 (0)1273 877534 E eswenquiries@sussex.ac.uk Visit the Department of Social Work and Social Care (www.sussex.ac.uk/socialwork) (http://www. sussex.ac.ukimages’prospectus/galleries/384,jpe) (http://www. sussex ac.uklimages/prospectus/galleries/383.,jpg) (http://www. sussex ac.uklimages/prospectus’galleries/380,jpg) (http://www. sussex.ac.ukvimages/prospectus/galleries/381 jpg) (attp://www-sussex ac uklimages/prospectus/galleries/382,jpe) (http://www. sussex ac uklimages/prospectus/galleries/385,jpe) Open Day, 28 January 2015 1pm to 4.30pm University of Sussex talk to academic faculty and current postgraduate students subject talks on postgraduate study, research and scholarships cchoose fom our exciting range of taught and research courses find out how postgraduate study can improve your career prospects ‘+ get details of our excellent scholarship schemes for taught postgraduate study.
