Sustainable Wilderness Education

February 3rd, 2015

To Parents
The Sustainable Wilderness Class is underway and we are starting to cover the course material in
the classroom. However the course of Sustainable Wilderness / Outdoor Education is all about
experiences and gaining the knowledge by doing activities.
Many of the activities have costs and are mandatory for course completion. The more activities
the students go on the better the experiences.
Please discuss the field trips listed below and determine if this is the class for your child. At this
time, if you see concerns to having your son or daughter participate in these activities a course
change is still possible. In order for us to plan on numbers, dates and times of each trip we are
asking all students continuing on with the course to please send a cheque of $140.00 made
payable to St. James Collegiate by Thursday, February 26th.
Proper trip planning has to take place before each trip and all the proper paper work has to be in
place before we can go. Students will be receiving several field trip permission slips throughout
the next five months. In order to participate in the fun, hands on activities the permission slips
must be signed and brought back to their designated teacher.
Mandatory trips and activity
1. St James Civic Center Pool for Canoe and water safety $10.00
2. Rushing River Class Camping Trip (3 days, 2 nights) $90.00 Final Exam
3. Fort Whyte Alive Wilderness Survival $10.00
4. Ice Fishing Field Trip - $5.00
5. Silver Heights Archery Lanes - $10.00
6. Vertical Adventures Wall Climbing - $15.00
7. Bike Safety and trip to Assiniboine Park (no cost)
Students that can drive to the activities in Winnipeg need to have the proper paper work in and
signed with a copy of their drivers license. If your son or daughter has already completed this
paperwork for a sports team or other school event they will not need to fill it a second time. Staff
members or a professional bus driver will be transporting students outside of the perimeter.
Sincerely,

Ashley van Aggelen
