The document describes the origins and history of the Sicilian Mafia. It explains that the Mafia originated in Sicily as groups that formed to protect themselves from foreign invaders when Sicily was ruled by outsiders. Over time, the Mafia became known as criminal organizations or "families" that carried out secret actions and took advantage of chaotic conditions in Sicily to extort money through protection rackets. The document notes there are four major criminal organizations in Italy today, including the Sicilian Mafia, and mentions that there is also a separate American Mafia involved in illegal activities in the United States since the 1920s.

A network of organized-crime groups based in Italy and America is what we call
the Mafia. Mia famiglia are the Sicilians who banded together in groups to protect ourselves and carry out justice. We do business with family who are trusted, unless they rat, we take em out with roughness. By the 19th century we emerged with today's official name, Cigars and bars, the Sicilian Mafia is no game. Our roots originate from Sicily, of course. Where we learned to take lives, no remorse. But you cant blame us, we were ruled by a long line of foreign invaders. The Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, French and Spanish, were just a bunch of traders. We were the residents of this intruded island, forming hostile occupying forces to protect ourselves . . . That was how the great Mafia got started. We became known as clans or families who carried out actions in secret. We never squealed, showed weakness, or made what was confidential known and imparted. We took advantage of the frequently violent, chaotic conditions in Sicily and extorted protection money from landowners. We had so much power, the Mafia was on a rise, it was like a new Italian makeover. The Sicilian Mafia is one of four major criminal networks currently based in Italy: acting as a protector against the arrogance of the powerful with hostility. Camorra of Naples, the Ndrangheta of Calabria and the Sacra Corona Unita of Puglia are the other organized groups. Who we discussed our plans with for when we arrive at our targets front stoop. We talk business over a glass of wine, and go over who does what when the clock hits nine. Loyalty to the family will always be the key. But if you break our trust, you should not hesitate to flee. Watch yourself, because the Mafia is not only in Sicily.
But there is a separate entity from the Mafia in Italy
That came to power in the 1920s and still remains in business today: The American Mafia - where we are involved in unworld activities in the USA.
