Dear Parents,
In Spanish class, we have been working hard on learning food vocabulary coupled with
the Spanish expressions, I like [Me gusta(n)] and I dont like [No me gusta(n)]. This
unit culminated in a story, completely in Spanish, that highlights a fly liking certain foods
until it meets its demise with a frog that likes the tasty fly. Students practiced reading the
story to their classmates. In addition, students illustrated the story to reinforce their
knowledge of the text.
Today, your child should have brought this three-page story home. As homework, every
student is required to read the story to his or her parent(s), first in Spanish. After the
story is read in Spanish, the child should explain to her or his parent(s) what is
happening in the story, in English. Then, the parent(s) should read the text while the
child helps the parent(s) pronounce the words.
Please note, I do not expect perfection! If students (and parents) mispronounce words
or forget vocabulary, its okay. Mastery is not an expectation because Spanish
instruction occurs on average, twice a week for thirty minutes only, whereas for the rest
of the school day (and in most homes) students are completely immersed in English.
The focus should be on having fun with the language.
Kindly sign this sheet above so that I know the assignment was completed. These
activities must be completed with a parent and signed by a parent or legal guardian, not
a signature from a sibling, friend, teacher, teachers aide, neighbor, etc. Students are
allowed to do this activity with as many individuals as theyd like, but one of those
individuals must be a parent or legal guardian. On the due date listed above, each child
should bring this sheet of paper back to school, with the signature.
This homework sheet, along with the story, can also be found on my blog:
