    During the late 1800's there was racism all around the United States. I think Lincoln was not racist but didn't take action against slavery. He would free the slaves only to save the union since it is his pride and joy.

    Duringthelate1800sAbrahamLincolnwasrunningforpresidentandtherewas
    racismallaroundtheUnitedStates.Racismissomethingthatisstillgoingontodayand
    especiallytodaythereisbrutalitytowardsblackslikeforexampleMikeBrownhewaskilledby
    awhitecop.IthinkLincolnwasnotracistbutdidnttakeactionagainstslavery.
    Lincolnwasnotracistbutdidntcareaboutslaveryandhedidnthedidntcareifitwas
    happening.ThereasonwhyIthinkthisisbecauseinhisdebateagainstdouglashestatesI
    havenopurposedirectlyorindirectlytointerferewiththeinstitutionofslaveryinthestates
    whereitexists.Ihavenopurposetointroducepoliticalandsocialequalitybetweenthewhite
    andblackraces.Thispieceofevidencesupportsmyargumentbecausehesaysthathe
    doesntwanttointerfereanditsoundslikehejustdoesntcareaboutslavery.Lincolnwasnot
    aracistpersonhedidnthateblackpeoplebuthereallydidntcareabouttheirfreedom.
    Lincolnwasnotracistbuthewouldfreetheslavesonlytosavetheunion.Ithinkthis
    becausehesaysinalettertoHoraceGreeleyIfIcouldsavetheunionwithoutfreeingany
    slave,Iwoulddoit,andifIcouldsaveitbyfreeingalltheslaves,Iwoulddoit,andifIcould
    saveitbyfreeingsomeandleavingothersalone,Iwouldalsodothat.Hesaidthathewould
    doanythingtosavetheunionifitmeantfreeingslaves.ThereforeLincolnwoulddoanything
    fortheunionsinceitishisprideandjoy.
    LincolnwasnotracistbuthedidnotdoanythingabouttheFugitiveSlaveLaw
    becausehedidnotwantanythingtohappentohimlikehissafety.InAPeoplesHistory
    HistorianHowardZinnquotedLincolnsayingIconfess,Ihatetoseethepoorcreatures

    hunteddown...butIbitemylipsandkeepquiet.ThisshowshowLincolnfeltthatslaveswere
    beingtreatedhorrible.Hefeltunsafebecausehethoughtthatwhitepeoplewouldgoafterhim
    andassassinatehim.Lincolnwasntexactlyracistbuthecouldnotdoanythingaboutit.
    InconclusionLincolnwasnotracistbutdidnttakeactionagainstslavery.Lincolns
    inactionmadehimseemracisteventhoughhewasnot.Forexamplehowhesaidhewould
    savetheslavestosavetheunionmadehimseemracist.Althoughhesaidthathehatesto
    seethemsufferwhichalsomakeshimseemlikehewasnotforslavery.
