In1960,HowardFinsterbeganconstructionofanelaboratesculpturegardeninatwoandahalfacre
swampnexttohishouseinPennville,Georgia.Firsthefilledinwhathadbeenacommunitydump:
"Ittookmesevenyearstofillinthatswampofrichmuckthatwentthreetofourfeetindepth."
(Turner,p.54)Somewhatmiraculously,thegardentodayisamarvel,withatowermadeoutofrusted
bicycleframes,walkwaysinlaidwithmirrorsandcastoffjewelry,andhundredsofindividualmixed
mediacreations.ItisavisionofEden,builtupoutofadumpandconstructedoftrash.Finster's
combinationoftextandvisualformsprovidesthevisitorwithatrulyuniqueexperience,thepointof
whichistheBiblicaledificationofthesoul,accordingtotheartist.Manyotherexamplesofthissort
ofearthlyparadiseexistinthetraditionoffolkart(Dewhurst,pp.8587),butFinster'ssocalled
"ParadiseGarden"isespeciallystrikinginitsovertlyevangelicaltheme.Liketheeightfootconcrete
shoebearingaversefromEphesians,"Andyourfeetshodwiththepreparationofthegospelof
peace,"manyofthepieceswithinthegardenillustrateBiblicalpassages,sothat,likehisdaughter
said,"Anyonecouldunderstanditthatway."
TrashCanfromParadiseGarden
Therearecertainlycuriousdetails,likethejarcontainingthetonsilsofaboywhovisitedthegarden
immediatelyfollowingtheirremoval.Thepurposeofsuchpiecesseemstobetoprovidethevisitor
withaninterestingexperience,tokeepitfunandslightlyweird,tobringinthecrowds.Andbringin
thecrowdsitdoes,allowingFinsterlotsofcompanyandperhapstheoccasionallostsoulreadyforthe
wordofGod.
AlsoonthepropertyisthemorerecentadditionofaweddingcakelikebuildingthatFinstercallsthe
"World'sFolkArtChurch."Interestingly,thewords"folkart"couldnothavebeenapartofFinster's
vocabularyuntilhis"discovery"bythemediaandtheartestablishment,intheearly1980's.Sincethat
time,hehasbecomethemostexhibited"folkartist"inAmericaandhasevenappearedonThe
TonightShowwithJohnnyCarsonandpaintedalbumcoversforrockgroupslikeR.E.M.andthe
TalkingHeads.
