Initial Design
-Our original surface
area was 1,133.54
centimeters
-Forces considered
were gravity, air
resistance, and impact
First Test
-Our first drop was the 11th slowest out of 16 groups
-Our time was 1.14 seconds; speed was 5.26
m/s2
-Fastest drop was .56 seconds; speed was
10.71 m/s2
-Slowest drop was 1.82 seconds; speed
was 3.29 m/s2
Redesign Process
-We decided to stick with the same surface area
(1,133.54cm)
-We took out the unnecessary plates to remove any
excess weight
-We added a cup over the cup holding the egg to lock
the egg in place
-We added padding in an effort to protect the egg
Final Results
-Our egg drop fell at a medium speed compared to
other groups in our class
-Our fall time was 1.9 seconds; velocity was 4.81 m/s
-Fastest group was .99 seconds; velocity
was 9.24 m/s
-Slowest time was 2.9 seconds; velocity
was 3.15 m/s
Conclusion
-NASA should pick our device because our
design was pretty & clean. With a few minor
adjustments, like re-adding the plate at the
bottom, we would safely land our device for
Americas beloved astronauts.
