(a) Determine the median and the mean of the number of minutes spent. Hence, calculate Pearson's coefficient of
skewness.
[7]
(b) State whether the median or the mean is more appropriate measure of central tendency. Give a reason.[2]
2. The following table, based on a survey, shows the numbers of boy and girl viewers who prefer either game show
or educational programmes on television.

A television viewer involved in the survey is selected at random. X is the event that a girl viewer is selected,
and Y is the event that a viewer prefers game show programmes.
(a) Find P( X Y ) and P( X Y )
[3]
(b) Determine whether X and Y are independent and whether X and Y are mutually exclusive.
[4]
3. Discrete random variable X represents the numbers of computers sold by a shop in a week. X has a Poisson
distribution with mean and E(X2) = 20.
(a) Find the value of .
[3]
(b) Find the probability that at least 3 computers are sold by the shop in 2 weeks.
[4]
4. On the average , a nut making machine is known to produce 6 % defective nuts. A random sample of 100 nuts is
inspected and if nine or more nuts are found to be defective, the operation of the machine will be stopped.
(a) State the sampling distribution for the sample proportion of defective nuts.
[1]
(b) Find the probability that the operation of the machine will be stopped.
[4]
(c) Construct a 98 % confidence interval for proportion of defective nuts.Interpret your answer.
[4]
(d) What is the effect on the confidence interval if the confidence level is increased from 98 % to 99 %? [2]
5. A random sample of 40 batteries produced by a company is found to have a mean lifespan of 17 months and
standard deviation of lifespan of 4 months. Determine, at 5 % significance level, whether the mean lifespan of the
batteries produced by the company is less than 18 months.
[6]
6. Eggs are packed in boxes of 6 for transport from an egg farm to a supermarket. After being transported, 100
boxes are chosen at random, and the number of cracked eggs in each box is recorded, giving the results in the table
below.

Assume that, for each egg transported, the probability that it is cracked is 0.12, independently of whether any other
eggs are cracked. Test ,at the 5 % significance level, whether the binomial distribution fits the above data. [5]

8. The mass of a pill made by a factory is distributed normally with mean and standard deviation 1.5 g.
(a) If = 7 g , find the probability that the mean mass of a random sample of 9 pills is less than 6 g.
[4]
(b) If the mean mass of a random sample of 9 pills is 6.8 g, obtain a 95 % confidence interval for . State, giving
reasons, whether the management's claim = 7.5 g is true or false.
[6]
(c) Determine the smallest sample size needed so that the value of obtained is less than 0.5 g at a 95 %
confidence level.
