In our film opening

we used several
conventions of
thrillers such as the
following:
Low Key Lighting
Tense Music
Creation of a
mystery (Barthes
Theory)

The reason we used

these conventions is
because it helps set
the mood of the film
and creates tension.
This is ultimately what
you want from a
thriller; something that
keeps the audience on
the edge of their seat.

We also used other conventions such as

high angled shots as this enhances the
viewing experience and makes the
character appear weaker when the viewers
are looking down on them.
We initially filmed a close up of our
character to show her emotion as she was
walking however the transition from the
CCTV then the close up shot didnt flow
with the jump from shot types being too
dramatic.

One of the thriller

conventions we didnt use
were quick cuts. We did
experiment with quick cuts
when editing however we
found it didnt look quite
right and got very confusing
for the viewer. This is why
as a group decision we
decided to leave this
convention out. With review
on our final product we
should have used this
convention because it ended
up being a very linear and
told the majority of the
story with no confusion.

With our two characters being

16 and 17 years of age our
film represents the social
group of post 16 and college
students.
Due to the two characters staying after
college to catch up on work it represents the
social group of people who are willing to
learn.

It also represents the social group

because people of the age of sixteen
and older have the stereotype
attached to them that they are
people who are anti-social, doing
drugs and overall causing a nuisance,
however in the introduction it shows
two students who are willing to stay
behind to carry on their education
portraying them in a positive light.

However, later on in the

introduction the perception of the
two characters are changed
because of what happens.
With the girl in the introduction she
is a hardworking student (like a
princess in propps theory), but at
the end the perception of her
changes as she becomes the
vulnerable person.
Whereas with the male character
he is portrayed as another person
who is willing to stay behind and
doing extra work portraying himself
as a good character, but by the end
he is portrayed as mysterious
character.

No typical media institution would

distribute the film because of it
being a small film made within
College. The only place would be
on YouTube where we would have
to upload it our self and market it
our self as well.
Uploading it to YouTube is also a
lot quicker and would reach a
wider audience because there are
over 3 billion views a day on the
site meaning that people that have
an interest in thrillers would be
able to see our film easily.

However, in an ideal world a

company like Film4 would be the
best to distribute our film product
because they are already well
known for distributing this genre of
films, as well as cinema, DVD and
online releases they operate their
own TV channel allowing them to
distribute it via that as well.

The audience for our media product will be

male and female teenagers ranging from ages
13-17 , this is because our actors are around
the same age and at college doing extra work
after the bell goes.

People within this age gap may be able

to relate to this as they may frequently
stay after school or college to get extra
work done.

The settings (a college/school) would

also be something theyre use to so
seeing something like our storyline
happen in school would make it more
appealing to them as its a common
setting for them.

Our film shows and uses a lot of

technology such as phones;
earphones and computers.
People who are aged 13-17 will
frequently use these things on
a daily basis whereas someone
aged 50 is not likely to have
headphones on the table when
working: this is why it doesnt
appeal to that age group.

We attracted the audience through

our film by the characters/ actors
being around the age of our target
audience making it more relatable
to them as they can emphasise
with them easily.

We used technology that reflects

what young people use daily as
for many the way the
communicate the most frequently
is via text messages or other
instant messenger apps/sites.

We use a popular genre that

appealed to target audience as it
was one of the genre that we
could make the most realistic, so
we used a common action that
happens everyday throughout the
world. By doing this we, showed
how easy it is for the particular
event to happen.

The setting is familiar to them as

its somewhere that they go daily,
so when they see the introduction
it makes it more realistic to them
and shows that the event can
happen anywhere.

Throughout the process

of our task every
member in our group
has learnt a huge
amount of skills ranging
from using the camera
to editing in Premiere
Pro. In Premiere we
learnt things such as
how to cut the footage
how to colour correct
and how to fix the audio
so it was louder. When
using the camera we
learnt all about
recording; lighting;
focus and zoom. With
every member in our
group taking part in
recording we helped
each other in using the
camera until we were
all confident.

In premiere pro as a group it

was combining knowledge and
experimenting to create an
outcome that looks good. We
mainly used the cutting tool
to edit and cut the video and
then dragged them in to
place. Everyone in our group
took part in creating a fade
with music or with the film
which turned out to be a good
effect with the outcome. We
also used colour correction to
enhance the mood of our
film; how we did this is on our
blog. We experimented with
filters and effects in Premiere
Pro however we found they
took away the mood that we
was creating and felt the raw
look to our film was best.

One thing we wish we had

learnt was how to fix the
small audio issue we had,
one scene you were able to
hear the static noise from
one of our phones, and had
tried to fix it however
everything we tried didnt
work because it didnt sound
any better having silence in
the clip that we had
removed.

The progression of the preliminary task to the full product has taught
us many things. The key things that stand out to us are: the
importance of camera angles and how much music and editing can
really add effect to the film.

The music we added

really builds up tension
and the increase in
loudness tells the
viewer something is
about to happen. It is
also important to use
when there is a space of
silence and it can
bridge between to
different scenes or
shots.

A variation in
camera angles
makes the film
more enjoyable to
watch and helps
let the viewer
know who's weak
and whos
dominant.

We learnt how to colour

correct shots and found
it changes the mood of
the scene, this
enhances the tension.
This is because it meets
the normal conventions
of a thriller. Colour
correction can also fix
some shots as well, for
example in the first
shot it was too dark
however we were able
to fix it with colour
correction and adjusting
the brightness.
