In March First Grade will be learning many new things! In

phonics we will be learning about welded sounds and
diphthongs. We are ending our unit on Graphing and moving
onto Measurement and Time. Students will work on measuring
objects using nonstandard units and tell the time to the hour
and half hour.
In writing we will be working on writing informative pieces
about famous women in America. For grammar students are
working on have/has, was/were as well as comparing using
er, est. During social studies students will learn about needs
and wants, as well as services and goods. In science students
will wrap up our weather unit and move onto properties of
matter.
Please continue to read with your child! It is very important
especially this time in first grade, where students are becoming
more knowledgeable with main idea and details. Therefore,
asking comprehension questions is helpful, too. Also,
students should still be practicing addition and subtraction
facts!

A Look Back

First Grade worked very hard last month on their famous African
American projects. The presentation was a success! Thanks for
everyone who attended!
In math we worked on both double digit addition and subtraction, as
well as graphing. Students worked to identify, read and write tally,
picture and bar graphs. In phonics students worked on Long U and
viewed all long vowel patterns. With all the long vowel patterns, this is
something that first graders are still working to master! In writing we
worked on creating a persuasive piece about being the President of the
United States. In grammar students have worked on irregular verbs
and pronouns and incorporating them into their sentences. Along with
writing, we have been working on continuously using various sentence
starters, when writing a paragraph!

A special thanks to

A special thanks to Mrs.Asveren for

coming in and teaching us all about
Chinese New Year! Our students loved
learning about all of the traditions and
celebrations. We even got to do our
very own dragon dance!
