Title: Build a model of the human respiratory system to demonstrate the
breathing machanism.
Aim: To investigate
Hypothesis:
Variables: a) Manipulated:
b) Responding:
c) Constant:
Apparatus and Materials: Plastic jar, Y-tube, thick plastic sheet, two
balloons, cellophane
tape, two large rubber bands, and plasticine.
Procedure: 1) Build a model of the respiratory system.
2) Pull the rubber sheet downwards and observe what
happens inside the bell jar.
3) Push the rubber sheet upwards into the jar and observe
what happens.
Observation/Result: 1) When the rubber sheet is pulled downwards, the
balloons expand.
2) When the rubber sheet is pushed upwards, the
balloons contracts.
Conclusion: When the air pressure in the thoracic cavity decreases, air is
sucked in the
inhalation process. When the air pressure in the thoracic
cavity increases,
air is forced out during exhalation process.
