Enfuvirtide
Mechanism of action
Enfuvirtide interferes with entry of HIV-1 into CD4 cells by
inhibiting fusion of viral and cellular membranes.
Pharmacokinetics
Enfuvirtide is a 36-amino-acid synthetic peptide administered
twice daily by subcutaneous injections into the arm, thigh, or
abdomen.
Adverse effects
Adverse effects include hypersensitivity reactions and
injection site discomfort. Overall, enfuvirtide may have an
improved safety profile compared with other antiretrovirals
because it does not exert its effects inside host cells. Because
the drug is metabolized to individual amino acids, there
are no interactions with other medications or with the P450
hepatic enzymes. Adverse effects are primarily gastrointestinal
