Egyptian Government

The President:

Background

The current President of


Egypt is: Abdel Fattah
al-Sisi. He was born in
Cairo, Egypt in 1954.
Prior to becoming
President, he served in
the Egyptian military. In
2014, Sisi won the
Egyptian Presidential
Election by a landslide.

Egypts constitution was


adopted in 1971. The
constitution declared that
the country would have a
President. The President
works side by side with
The Prime Minister to
oversee the wellbeing of
the entire country.

The President is elected


every six years and
wins by majority vote of
the Peoples Assembly.
The President serves a
four-year term.

In addition to the President


and Prime Minister, the
governorates of the
country also have their
own governors.
Governorates are similar
to small states or counties
in Egypt. In all, there are
27 governorates in the
country.

The Prime Minister

s The Prime Minister is used in the Egyptian Government for

Checks and Balances, or in other words, to make sure the


President does not take too much control over the country.
The current Prime Minister of Egypt is Ibrahim Mahlab, who
was elected in 2014.
The Prime Ministers duties include:
Proposing laws and amendments
Sharing responsibility for the country of Egypt with the
President.

Peoples
Assembly

The Peoples Assembly is made up of 434 members. The Egyptian people elect the 434 members
of the Peoples Assembly, with the exception of 10 of the 434 who are elected by the President.
Members are elected every five years.
Duties of The Peoples Assembly include:
Approving new laws and budgets proposed for the country
- Participate in electing the President after the Egyptian people have chosen candidates.

Governors
Egypt is made up of a total of 27 governorates, which
are similar to small states or counties. A governor, who
is appointed by the President of Egypt, runs each
governorate. Governorates can range from being fully
urban to a mixture of urban and rural.
Governors tend to issues within their governorates and
are responsible for the smaller governmental
responsibilities of their area.
