REFELECTION / COMMENTS:
Instructional Rounds
I have completed Instructional Rounds from start to finish in the four districts that
participated in the grant. Each district held its own unique Problem of Practice and
learning experience in completing the process from beginning to end. Participating
in Belfasts rounds brought a greater level of understanding as I was able to be a
part of developing the Problem of Practice, meeting with faculty to introduce the

idea, involvement at a faculty meeting and follow-up with administration on how to

proceed with the next steps. Our Curriculum Coordinator gave me a greater
perspective when she compared the Instructional Rounds practice as being similar
to the process of aligning curriculum with data comparisons. Not having a teaching
background it is very helpful to see how various techniques can be performed in
improving curriculum and teaching practices with the Common Core shift. An
interesting point in Belfasts rounds was when our IRs team met with faculty that
was interested in knowing more about the IR practice. There was great hesitation,
concern and heavy questioning in the entire practice. Teachers involved in the
meeting gave important insight into the perspectives of the teaching body and how
administration could approach introducing IRs in a way that would be less
threatening. Even with this advice and support our administration was met with
resistance and agreed to sign a Memorandum of Agreement with the Union to
ensure that this process was not evaluative in any aspect. Since the IRs have taken
place administration has received both positive and negative feedback, even before
results have been shared with the district. We have a faculty meeting in February to
share results with the staff, additional staff feedback will be interesting.
Board of Education Meeting The BOE asked the Business Office to prepare financial information dating back 10
years with comparisons up until this year. Information was presented at a BOE
meeting which I chose to attend in order to understand the financial components
and history of our district. A packet was well prepared with graphs, charts and
written explanations and was presented by the Business Manager. Despite very
complex information the overall presentation was informational and assisted with
my understanding of changes over the past ten years and projections for the future.
The most interesting piece of information was the grave financial concern for the
district and the options that were presented in moving forward. The Superintendent
gave options in improving the districts financial situation which included; raise tax
levy limit, raise taxes significantly, regionalize high school as option becomes
available, reorganization, look at non-mandated programs, continue to share
services and/or continue to use the fund balance. The direction that I would like to
see the district head would include regionalization of the high school as the option
becomes available, reorganization (centralization) and continue to share services. I
elected to be a part of a research committee as it becomes available in order to
assist with helping the district to have more information in order to make better
decisions.
