MEMORANDUM

TO:

DR. MARVIN BYNES

FROM:

NOEL OBRIEN, MEDIA CENTER PRACTICUM TEACHER

SUBJECT:

LIBRARY MEDIA PROGRAM SELF-EVALUATION RUBRIC

DATE:

MARCH 20, 2015

CC:

ASHLEY SHERMAN, SLMS

In collaboration with the SLMS, I have completed the 2015 Library Media Program Self-Evaluation
Rubric for Austell Elementary Schools Media Center. This process provided an opportunity to gain
perspective while evaluating our media centers current status and progress based on the state of
Georgias target indicators. I thought you would be interested in the results of our assessment.
Not surprisingly, our school media center was defined as exemplary in the following areas:

Engagement of active teaching roles in professional library media staff

Resources that encourage and support reading, viewing, and listening
Providing services to students with diverse learning abilities, styles, and needs
Technology management
Staffing a full-time SLMS
Meeting square footage requirements based on FTE
Streaming video throughout the school to support the curriculum
Providing access to print and non-print resources, as well as to online information
Managing library media resources for maximum efficient use
Using GALILEO resources in an organized manner and on a frequent basis
Maintaining communication among the SLMS in the district
Having clear, comprehensive policies that are reviewed annually
Continued professional development on the part of the SLMS

Our school media center was defined as proficient in the following areas:

Information literacy standards integrated into content instruction

Collaborative planning between the SLMS and classroom teachers
Routinely assessing student achievement
Integrating the use of emerging technology as a means for effective and creative teaching
Flexibly scheduled library media center
Adopting a policy that provides for the establishment of a media committee at the school
Spending 100% of the funds designated for library media center costs

Though our results indicate proficiency or exemplary in most areas, there was one area that was
identified as basic. Based upon our assessment, we found the AES Media Center to be basic in the
area of designated collaborative meetings between the SLMS and building principal. We do know,
however, that this is something that has already been identified during strategic planning meetings as
a weakness. Given the new plan of meeting at least once quarterly, we are confident that this area
will quickly be moved to proficient and look forward to sharing the updated results with you.

Additionally, we will soon move from proficient to exemplary in the category of routinely assessing
student achievement. Upon completion of the self-evaluation rubric, an action plan was developed to
provide opportunities for the SLMS and classroom teachers to collaboratively use a variety of tools
(rubrics, student presentations, student self-evaluations) to assess student achievement. These
assessment tools will consistently be used upon completion of each collaborative unit taught.
Thank you so much for your time, consideration, and support of our endeavors and progress.
Sincerely,
Noel OBrien
Practicum Student in the AES Media Center
