BACKGROUND
The government of Australia began when
British nations decided they wanted to
form a new independent government.
Therefore, in 1901 six British colonies
assembled to create a new government.
The federal government of Australia
formed the Commonwealth Government.
The rules of government or the way the
government was set to operate for
Australia were established as the
constitution of Australia.

Three Arms of Government


Legislature

This arm is also known as


Parliament.
There are two chambers:
The House of
Representatives and the
Senate.
The House of
Representatives has 150
members and the senate
has 76 members.

Executive

Local Government
The local governments of Australia
vary state by state. There are six
states and the Northern territory.
The local government deals with
waster management, town
planning, and public recreation
facilities.

This arm is also known as


the administrative arm
Government employees are
involved in this arm.
The prime minister is
elected and holds a
position in this arm.

Judiciary

This is also known as the


legal arm.
This arm is in charge of
enforcing the laws of

Prime Minister of Australia


The prime minister of Australia is in charge of the
Commonwealth of Australia and is appointed by
the Governor-General of Australia. The prime
minster holds the most powerful position. The
prime minister is also in charge of the National
Security. The 28th Prime Minister of Australia is
Tony Abbott. He is the current Prime Minister and
has been since September 18, 2013.
