TIRADOR
(by Brillante Mendoza)

I.
Scene: Woman stealing DVD
This particular scene got my attention mainly because of the realistic scenario it
showed. In this scene, the woman and his husband were caught stealing a DVD in a
store. When questioned, they told the owner reasons- that their child was sick and
they need money to pay for the medicines which in fact were lies. As they leave the
store, the woman cries and stole another DVD simply putting it inside her bag.]
II.
This movie displays the reality, the life of petty criminals and ordinary people in
Manila who have strong faith in local politicians. The scene tells that due to poverty,
they are implicitly doing crimes even the petty ones just to survive. Mendoza did
great on this movie, it showed how common Filipino is making his way to live, to
feed himself, his family by doing what seems the only way they can think stealing,
that is why they are being subjected to prejudice and stereotyping. The movie also
showed how corrupt politicians are, how they steal money from the poor. It tells on
how Filipinos are grasping for change by the lies of the politicians whom in return
will do their best in putting the nations money in their own pockets for their own
convenience. It was also shown how the politicians buy votes from the poor, in an
amount of money that they badly need, the people are easily blinded.
Hence, Mendoza implied how everyone can be a criminal, not all criminals wear
orange shirts, imprisoned. Sometimes the ruthful criminals wear suit, ride in a luxury
bulletproof car and surrounded by bodyguards.
Government is not the problem but the people who runs it. We are the problemhumans, unless we start the change ourselves, well never see the change we
always wanted to witness.
