Counties Manukau rep cricket in the 1980s.
Took up umpiring in 1991 (age: 40)
Umpired first senior game in 1991 (age: 40)
Umpired first Fergus Hickey game in 1992 (age: 41)
Umpired first test in 2001 (age: 50)
Appointed to world elite panel in 2009 (age: 57)
In the last year Tony has umpired in Argentina, West Indies, Australia, New Zealand,
England, Scotland, West Indies again, India & South Africa.

What can umpires earn?

International umpires are on a significant annual retainer plus USD$5,000 per test,
USD$2,500 per ODI and T20, plus expenses.
1st Class umpires are on a seasonal retainer plus match fees they can earn up to
NZD$50,000
Fergus Hickey umpires receive $100 per day plus expenses.

What do you need to do to be the next Tony Hill?

A feel for the game ex senior players and/or representative players have an
advantage
Knowledge of the rules you will need to learn these and pass your umpiring
exams
An ability to relate to the players
Eyesight &hearing - yes, contrary to popular opinion umpires need to be able to
see and hear!

What can you do to fast track your way to the top?

Take your umpiring exams while youre still playing


Stand in games when you can, even if you are still playing on Saturdays. Eg.
School games, Sunday age group games, District Association 2nd XI, women
games (note you will be paid $50 to $60 per day for most of these) then when
you do retire from playing you will already be qualified and experienced.

Fact: There are 26,000 adult cricketers in NZ about 20 of these play for the Blackcaps
each year (odds 1 in 1,300)
Fact: there are about 300 senior umpires in NZ. Three of them are international
umpires (odds 1 in 100) and 20 of them are 1st class umpires (odds 1 in 15)
