My Day As A Senior Citizen

By: Sydney Brooks

On February 10th, 2015 I dressed for senior citizen day of spirit week. I wore the
costume all day until cheerleading practice, driving around, walking to class, doing
homework, and eating lunch. At school people knew why I was dressed up and some
looked at me weirdly anyway. At lunch before college people stared in disbelief. The real
experiment began when I went to my Philosophy class at SMC. Walking onto the
campus some people stared, some laughed, and some just did not make eye contact.
When I walked into my class, my professor and many people in the class started
laughing. As I was walking to my seat, I heard Edwardsburg students whispering behind
me. I sat down and class began. Not long after starting the class, the professor called
me out and asked me to stand so everyone could see me. He asked me to explain why
I was dressed like I was and I started to elaborate. When I did, he spoke over me asking
if I had lost a bet. While the class was laughing, I explained that it was homecoming
week at school. For the next hour and a half, I was called Grandma. I can understand
the classess shock, my costume was a good one. The experience was fun when there
were others doing the same as me, like in school. It became a little scary when I was
publicly isolated and scrutinized. I think outwardly at least, I handled the situation well
and with humor as I am used to people saying that I am weird or different. It was an
interesting experience to say the least.
