In 1942 British soldier Jack Celliers comes to a Japanese

prison camp. The camp is run by Yonoi, who has a firm belief in
discipline, honor and glory. In his view, the allied prisoners are
cowards when they chose to surrender instead of committing
suicide. One of the prisoners, interpreter John Lawrence, tries
to explain the Japanese way of thinking, but is considered a
traitor.

The film was entered into the 1983 Cannes Film Festival in
competition for the Palme dOr, and Sakamotos score won the
film a BAFTA Award for Best Film Music.
Composer and actor in Furyo Ryuichi Sakamoto is an
internationally reputed musician. As one of the biggest
Japanese rock stars, he is a graduate of the Tokyo University
of the Arts, and he has worked for several years as a studio
musician and arranger before he released his first album and
joined the Yellow Magic Orchestra. Then Sakamoto recorded
as a solo artist and collaborated with many international artists
such as Youssou NDour, Iggy Pop, Alva Noto, Cesria vora,
Caetano Veloso and Robert Wyatt, amongst others. Sakamoto
is an artist of an original style who combines classical
occidental symphonic composition, traditionnal Japanese
sounds, and experimental electronic music.
