Objectives for Level 5

Level 5: Advanced level:


Reading Skills:
Upon completion of Level 5, students will be able to:
o Comprehend, with 80% accuracy, longer and conceptually
complicated articles and essays from a variety of sources by
answering questions posed to them.
o Define and use important academic and every day vocabulary.
Students will study a minimum of 150 new vocabulary words, in
addition to others that will be discussed in class.
o Comprehend literature: short stories, plays, or poetry, with 80%
accuracy.
o Identify and discuss the basic elements of fiction such as point of
view, characterization, conflicts, irony and symbolism, plot
development, etc.
o Summarize a reading selection with 80% accuracy.

Produce an outline of a reading selection with 80% accuracy.


o Create timelines of information in a text with 80% accuracy.
o Hypothesize and identify an authors point of view
o Interpret graphs, timelines, and other visual organizers with 80%
accuracy.

Writing Skills:
Upon completion of Level 5, students will be able to:
o Identify and avoid plagiarism, especially when writing research-type
papers.
o Produce an outline for their written work.
o Produce written work with appropriate argumentative thesis
statements, strong topic sentences, and satisfactory support
sentences.
o Produce work with solid evidence and arguments to support an
assertion.
o Analyze and synthesize information from sources and used this
information to support their own arguments with 80% accuracy.
o Prepare annotated bibliographies following the MLA style with 80%
accuracy.

o Write a number of short research papers where they will quote and
cite material and prepare bibliography pages.
o Prepare bibliographic (reference pages) following the MLA format.

Listening and Note-Taking Skills:


Upon completion of Level 5, students will be able to:
o Identify different speech habits used by speakers in presenting
lectures or classroom information: redundancies, use of specific
cues or terms to introduce a topic, key words that signal a change
in thought or topic.
o Predict the direction they think a lecture will take (with 80%
accuracy) by listening carefully to the introduction of the lecture.
o Take notes using different strategies: key words, symbols, etc.
o Comprehend classroom lectures or other listening selections by
answering different types of questions with 80% accuracy. Question
types include true/false, multiple choice, short-answer, etc.
o Take accurate notes of a classroom lecture with 80% accuracy.

Advanced Conversation skills:


Upon completion of Level 5, students will be able to:
o Use gambits and pre-determined conversation patterns and rituals
to express uncertainty, to break the ice, to maintain a conversation,
and to voice opinions, etc.
o Role play adequately in unrehearsed situations
o Share/express their opinions about a topic in a clear and explicit
way.
o Debate issues in a logical and affirming way.
