Democrats Block Commonsense Legislation To Change Presidential

Primary Date
Santa Fe, NM Today, Democrats in House Government, Elections and Indian
Affairs Committee struck down commonsense legislation that would move up New
Mexicos presidential primary and bring more dollars into the state. The legislation
would move up the primary from June to the third Tuesday of March, making New
Mexico a destination for presidential candidates and their campaign staff.
The bill was tabled by a 6-6 vote on party lines.
Moving up our primary would shine a spotlight on our great state and compel
presidential candidates and their staffs to stay in our hotels, spend money on
advertising and give the people of New Mexico a chance to get involved in the
process," said Floor Majority Leader Nate Gentry, the bill's sponsor. "Its
disappointing that Democrats have once again voted on strict party lines to block
commonsense legislation.
