Interview with our Maths Teacher, Ms. Pouliou

by Isabella Dimitroulakou Marouga

1. Which aspect of your job do you love the most?

- The subject itself, Mathematics. I also really love my
students and the class, meaning the cooperation and the
chance young people have to learn new and diverse things. I
enjoy discovering paths of knowledge inside my students'
minds.
2. Which subjects have you studied?
- I studied Mathematics at Aristotelio University, with a special
degree on Applied Mathematics.
3. Have you worked as anything other than a teacher?
- I've worked at a factory, as a shop employee, as a
secretary, at a public and also at a software company
where I educated the staff on new programmes.
4. Do you have a dream regarding your career that you have not followed but would like
to?
- I would like to get a postgraduate degree on
Mathematical Analysis and write a book dedicated to
Mathematics.
5. What is your opinion about Greece's educational
system? Would you like to change something?
- Regarding Mathematics, I believe that the system
does not support students and I do not approve of
the memorisation of mathematical formulae. I'm
against external tutoring and I believe that schools
should have a direct influence on exams.
[The system] should not be so focused on examination:
we should focus solely on the gaining of knowledge and not the gaining of marks.
6. Which is your most beloved memory from your experiences as a teacher?
-The smile of success on my students' faces when they get accepted into their chosen
universities.

World Maths Day

by Georgia Linardou
World Maths Day is an online international mathematics
competition, powered by educational resource provider 3P
Learning.
The first World Maths Day was held on March 14, 2007
(Pi Day), and has been held on the 1st Wednesday in March ever
since. In 2011, the competition added a second event, namely World
Spelling Day and was officially
rebranded as the World Education
Games. In 2012, a third event was
added -World Science Day. The
Games are now sponsored by
Samsung, and supported by
UNICEF as a global charity
partner.
Overview
World Maths Day involves
participants playing 60 second
games, based on Mathletics. The
contests involve mental maths problems which test the accuracy
and speed of the students as they compete against others
across the Globe. The simple but innovative idea of combining
multi-player online gaming with maths problems has contributed
to its popularity.
The inaugural World Maths Day was held on March 13,
2007. 287000 students from 98 countries answered 38904275
questions. Numbers participating have steadily increased in the
following years as evidenced by the Guinness Record of 2010. In
2012 over 5.9 million students from around the World registered
to take part in the Games.

Alexander the Great Rock Opera

by Lucy Kotsiopoulou (Editor)
Directed by Giannis Vouros, the Rock opera
Alexander the Great has been touring Greece and is now
hoping to gain a worldwide audience.
The life of Alexander (356B.C. - 323B.C.) was full of
drama and excitement, from his childhood in Macedonia to his
early death in Babylon. He and his army were victorious from
Greece to India, and he has now been immortalised in music!
The rock opera stars Dimitris Tiktopoulos as
Alexander and Nikias Fontaras as Hephaestus in a dramatic
and moving account of conquest and emotion. The music, written
by Constantine Arthirides, is reminiscent of The Who's Tommy,
and Led Zeppelin, combining amazing voices, stunning guitar
and drum solos, all bound together creating the perfect
opera.
The lyrics are full of witty and clever rhymes,
following the storyline with accuracy. All this with live music
as well!
It was showing at the Megaron from 27/2 1/3.
Watch the website for future performances!

The Theory of Everything

by Eirini Ieronimaki
The Theory of Everything is the story of the
most brilliant and celebrated physicist of our time,
Stephen Hawking, and Jane Wilde, the arts student he fell
in love with whilst studying at Cambridge in the 1960s. Little
was expected from Stephen Hawking, a bright but
shiftless student of cosmology, given just two years to
live following the diagnosis of a fatal illness at 21 years of
age. He became galvanised, however, by the love of fellow
Cambridge student, Jane Wilde, and he went on to be
called the successor to Albert Einstein, as well as a
husband and father to their three children. Over the
course of their marriage, as Stephen's body collapsed and
his academic
renown soared,
fault lines were
exposed that tested
their relationship
and dramatically
altered the course
of both of their
lives.
Eddie
Redmayne, who
played the role of
Stephen Hawking,
won the 2015 Oscar
for Best Actor.

Fashion
by Martina Noure
In my opinion, fashion is important for everybody, because
it is a way for people to show a part of
their personality. Most of the time, I wear
sporty clothes, and jeans are an
important part of my wardrobe. I try to
wear clothes which fit me well. The colour
is very important to me. I prefer
comfortable clothes which I choose
carefully, and I can never wear something
that I dont like. I ask my friends' opinion
when it comes to shopping, but other
peoples opinions dont influence my choice.
People spend a large part of their
earnings on clothing, and of course cost
is a element which influences quality. Every
person has a individual concept of the
word fashion. For some people, fashion is
their lifestyle, what they see when they
look at other people, the way they choose
their friends and what makes them happy.
For some others, it is an important part of their every-day life. It can
express our feelings and tells us a lot about our character.

And other people think that the way we choose our look
is just an unimportant daily routine!

Little Mix
by Maria Karkoglou
Back in 2011 when Perrie Edwards, Jesy
Nelson, Leigh Anne Pinnock and Jade Thrillwall met,
they passed the audition for the X Factor as solo
artists but, following the advice of Tulisa
Contostavlos they joined forces to become Little
Mix, the first group to win the X Factor. Having
captured the hearts and minds of the nation with
their chemistry,
their musical
awareness and
their vocal ability,
the girls went
straight to No. 1
with their debut
single 'Cannonball'.
Five months after
their victory in
the X Factor 2011,
Little Mix triumphantly returned with their new
single 'Wings'. After signing with Syco Music, Little
Mix are already thrilling stadiums and crowds with
their performances on the X Factor Tour, and
have announced that they will be the special guest
on the upcoming summer tour of JLS and
