- What Compromises were made prior to the Civil War?
- Why did these Compromises NOT work?

Objectives

After participating in a class exercise and exploring the provided


resources, students will demonstrate an understanding of what a
compromise is, what compromises were made, how each affected the
North/South, and why they ultimately failed, leading to the Civil War.

Introduction

Warm Up/Introduction: 10-15 minutes


A Middle Ground Activity:
The goal of the two sides is to reach a compromise regarding
the issue of slavery.
- Class will be divided into two teams-Pro
Slavery/Anti Slavery. Have students choose a team
representative for the speaker and a recorder.
- Each side will propose terms that they would like
to see put in place.
- After each side has their terms chosen, the
speaker and the recorder for each side will switch and
share their terms with the other point of view.
- They will them amend their terms with their
respective sides.
- Lastly, the speakers will meet in the Middle
Ground of classroom and see if there what compromises

can be made.
After the exercise I will reinforce:
- What a compromise is
- How the leaders of the United States tried to
enact Compromises to prevent the Civil War-but they
failed.
Instruction:
1. A Country Divided (40 minutes)
Give students example of what their foldable for the Divided
Foldable section will look like.
Students will work together within their pods to complete the
Compromises Google Document. Students will take notes on
each Comprise (6) in their IN-Notes should specify:
Name of Compromise
General overview of what Compromise was about
How it affected the North/South
Students will have approx 20 min of pod work time. Any
compromises they leave unfinished will be finished as
homework.
Closing: 5 minutes
What is the pattern to the compromises?
- states-free and slave?
- new territories?
Exit Ticket: WHY did these compromises fail?
Homework: Notes on unfinished compromises.
