    The Indian Removal Act of 1830, proposed by President Andrew Jackson, forced Native American tribes to relocate west of the Mississippi River, including the Cherokee people. Despite resistance from most tribes, the Cherokee were forced to march to Oklahoma in what became known as the Trail of Tears, resulting in the deaths of over 4,000 Cherokee from starvation and disease as approximately 15,000 had begun the journey. The Cherokee appealed to the Supreme Court which ruled they could keep their lands, but President Jackson ignored the ruling, violating the principle of checks and balances.
