Provide applicable standards for which you intend the
students to meet through this lesson in each of your
integrated disciplines.
CO Standard on Comprehensive Health:
-Students examine research on the harmful effects of
alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs
Reading/Writing/Communicating Standards
#4 Research and Reasoning
#2 Reading for all Purposes
ISTE Standards
#1: Creativity
#3: Research
#4: Decision Making
Students will be able to understand an effective way to do
research, understand the harms of a number of drugs, and
understand what to do with good research by creating a
BitStrip that tells the story of someone that they know/love
doing these drugs or harmful substances and why they
should encourage others not to do these substances.
Teacher will assess students how well the students were
able to take the knowledge they gained through research
and their ability to read and understand the research they
found through rubrics, and
presentations/observations/explanations of BitStrips.
-Computers/iPad/Laptops
-Books on drugs
-D.A.R.E Pamphlets
-Health books
The hook of the lesson. How will you get students interested
in this lesson? How will you grab their attention?
I was thinking about reading or showing them stories that are
approved by the school, about people that have either done
drugs/do drugs, know someone that they care about that has
done/do drugs and letting them get an emotional appeal
towards the idea of the drug-use of loved ones.
Brief explanation (2-3 sentences)

It allows the students to take information they read in books,

saw in the videos, read in pamphlets, and apply that
knowledge into a story they create by using a number of
pictures, fonts, and devices that helps portray the
information they gained in an efficient way.

Think of the various

educational theories and

concepts for best practices.
-Limit drug use choices (Ex.
-Watch Videos
Alcohol, Meth, Cocaine,
-Pick drug that catches their
Marijuana, Heroine)
eye
-Split students up depending
-Research
on how well they work
-Discuss
together
-Watch their research
-Listen in on discussions
How will you adjust the lesson for higher ability learners and
learners with disabilities? Provide a few suggestions.
-How drugs have helped/worsened their abilities?
-What drugs should not be considered harmful due to their
experience? (Ex. Marijuana to cancer patient)
-Higher ability could discuss the effect it would have on a
pregnant lady and the effect on the baby after it is born
How will you bring the lesson full circle to allow students to
reflect on their learning and acknowledge meeting of the
objectives?
I would bring this lesson full circle by allowing the students to
get into pairs/groups, depending on the students that I am
working with, to discuss what they found out about the drugs
that they researched. During these pair or group discussions,
I want these students to be able to tell one another why they
picked the drug they did and how it would effect their life if
the comic were to be a true story. In doing so, I think they
will be able to readily represent what it means to do such
substances.
Cite any resources used to create the lesson plan and which
will be used to present the lesson.
