occurs in January (The Weather Channel, 2012). The highest recorded temperature was 113F in
2006, and the lowest recorded temperature was 18F in 1949. The month with the highest rainfall
in 2012 was January at 2.61 inches (The Weather Channel, 2012). The average temperature
overall in Modesto is 61.7F, 13.10 inches of precipitation, 16.13 miles per hour wind speed, and

Flora and fauna
Modesto contains a few critters that may cause health concerns. Black widows often live
in cool dry places like closets, wood piles and under sinks (Mayo Clinic, 2012). They are rarely
POPULATION ANALYSIS
lethal but do require emergency attention right away. The spider is black with a red mark on the
underside. The bite feels like a pinprick and may appear red and swelled immediately after the
bite. After a few hours, the person bit will feel an intense pain and stiffness. Brown recluse spider
can be identified by its violin shape on its back. A fluid-filled bump forms at the bite site which
eventually falls off to leave a deep ulcer in skin. Death is rare but more common in children
(Mayo Clinic, 2012). Mosquitoes are also abundant in Modesto and may be carriers of different
diseases. Much like the H1N1 spread, mosquitoes can be the vectors that implant the bacteria in
humans. Poison oak can also be a concern in the Modesto area. After exposure to the plant, the
skin will appear red and raised with intense itching (United States Department of Agriculture,
2014).
Human-made environment
Modesto has a total of 73,918 housing units with 5,638 houses unoccupied. There are 1,805
mobile homes. 50,320 homes have heating and utility gas. There are 19,315 five bedroom
houses, 12,366 four bedroom houses, and 32,861 three bedroom houses (United States Census
Bureau, 2013).
Population
Size
The 2012 population estimate for Modesto was 203,547 (United States Census Bureau,
2013). The population of the West Modesto area was estimated 5,682 in 2010 (World Media
Group, 2014). According to these statistics, West Modesto contains about 38.8% of Modestos
population. Compared to the population estimate of 203,547, that would mean that about 3
people live in each house. Sadly, this is not true due to the homeless population who do not live
in a home at all.
Density
POPULATION ANALYSIS
The population density for Modesto is 5,423.37 people per square mile. The population
density for West Modesto is 2,796 people per square mile (World Media Group, 2014).
Composition
The number of people aged 16 years or older who are employed is 80,717 (World Media
Group, 2014). The top careers people are employed in are health care, social assistance,
manufacturing, retain trade, and education services. Educational services, health care and social
assistance careers are 20,606 or 25.53% of the employed population. People employed in
manufacturing are 10.8% or 8,715 people. 13.56% or 10,942 of employed people work in retain
trade (World Media Group, 2014).
The median age of residents living in Modesto is 34.2 years (World Media Group, 2014).
The types of different residents in Modesto are presented in Table 1.2 (World Media Group,

Social class
The average income for Modestos population is $45,934 (City-Data, 2009). American
Indian and Alaska Native seem to make the highest median income whereas Hispanics seem to

have one of the lowest household incomes. Since most of Modestos population is Hispanic, it
seems as though the majority of the population make less than $40,000 a year. Since Modesto is
a city, housing and living expenses tend to be high. It can be tough for a family making less than
$40,000 a year to get by financially. Table 1.5 shows the median household incomes from the
year 2009 in Modesto (City-Data, 2009).

Mobility
In Modesto, 78,811 people 18 years and over were commuting to work every day in the
year 2013 (United States Census Bureau, 2013). 4,329 movers came from a different state into
Stanislaus County in 2013. 6,840 people moved from Stanislaus County to another state in the
United States. 16,211 people moved from a different county in California into Stanislaus County.
15,030 moved to a different county in California from Stanislaus County. Lastly, 2,607 movers
are from abroad (United States Census Bureau, 2013).
Poverty level
36.8% of the population in West Modesto was below poverty level in the year 2009
(City-Data, 2009). The city of Modesto had 38,912, or 19.55% of its population living in poverty.
The highest race living below poverty is Asians at an unbelievable 97.1%. Blacks are the second
highest at 39.3% and right below them are American Indians and Alaska Natives at 39.2%.
POPULATION ANALYSIS
21.3% of the White race are living below poverty. Hispanics have 20.8% of their population
living below poverty. (City-Data, 2009). The location of PRC is accessible to the population
living below poverty level in the West Modesto area which is very convenient. This can be
helpful to families who need help with signing up for Cal Fresh, Women, Infants and Children
(WIC), and Medical Insurance. They provide many different parenting classes, nutritional
classes, and assistance to people in need. PRC is free to anyone in need of its services, so
families living in poverty do not have to worry about paying for their services.
Education level
80.0% of Modestos population is a high school graduate of higher. 18.3% have a
bachelors degree or higher (United States Census Bureau, 2013). People ages 18-24 with less
than a high school diploma is 15.3% of 20,970 total in that age range. People 25 years and older
with less than a high school diploma is 20% of 125,965 total in that age range (United States
Census Bureau, 2013).
Unemployment Rate
The unemployment rate in Modesto was 12.2%% in December of 2013 (Bureau of Labor
Statistics, 2014).
Population by age
Modestos population seems to be evenly distributed for the most part from birth
to age 59. Once at age 60 and above, rates start to decrease. There are dramatic decreases from
ages 50-59 to 60-69 as well as 60-69 to 70-79. Table 1.6 shows Modestos population by age
(United States Census Bureau, 2013).

Approximately 28,700 people have diabetes in Stanislaus County in the year 2013 which is a
total cost of 192 million dollars (County Health Calculator, 2014). Obesity is also a huge cause
for concern in the United States today. According to Karen Walk, a Registered Wound Nurse at
Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, obesity plays a huge role in wound healing. When people
POPULATION ANALYSIS
10
are obese, it takes their skin and bodies way longer to heal because of their lack of circulation
and abundance of adipose tissue (K. Walk, personal communication, March 2, 2014). In Table
1.9, percentages of obese individuals in different age ranges in the year 2009 in Stanislaus
County is presented. In Stanislaus County, 48.7% of people said they eat 5 or more vegetables a
day (California Department of Public Health, 2014). This is surprising that if so many people
claim to eat vegetables regularly that Stanislaus would have such a high rate of obesity.

The average infant mortality including all races is 44.3 from the year 2013 in Stanislaus
County (California Department of Public Health, 2014). This ranks 37 compared to all counties
in California. The highest infant mortality rate among different races is Hispanics at 28.7 ranking
50 compared to other counties. Low birth infants averaged at 481.3 in Stanislaus County in 2013.
There were 792.7 mothers aged 15-19 years old in 2013. The ratio of primary care doctors to
people in Stanislaus County is 916:1. This is a huge concern as there needs to be more doctors
for such a large population of people. It can be very difficult for doctors to have to care for that
many people. Although some of those 916 people do not see primary care doctors at all because
of health insurance unavailability and many more reasons (California Department of Public
Health, 2014).
Crime and violence can affect the community in a negative way. According to City-Data,
the most committed crime in 2012 in Modesto was thefts. Table 2.0 lists crime and violence in
Modesto in the year 2012 (City-Data, 2014).

Since immunizations can prevent so many different diseases, its important to look at the
communitys immunization status to see how many people are getting their immunizations. The
most recent data found was the year 2007 but according to the Centers for Disease Control and
Protection, many people do not get immunized. Less than 40% received the flu shot and only
about 20% received Tdap. The immunization status of individuals living in Stanislaus County
ages 18-49 are presented in Table 2.1 below (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2008).

Environmental health status
According to The American Lung Association, Stanislaus County earned an F for air
quality for 2011, ranking 12th worst among over 3,000 US counties for annual particle pollution
(Stanislaus County Health Services Agency, 2011). Modesto also ranked the 10th worst for yearround particle pollution out of 277 large United States Metropolitan Statistical Areas, 12th worst
for short-term particle pollution, and 14th worst for ozone pollution (Stanislaus County Health
POPULATION ANALYSIS
12
Services Agency, 2011). This poor air quality may contribute to the large amount of individuals
with asthma and other respiratory diseases.
Community Nursing Diagnoses
The statistics on Stanislaus County, Modesto as a whole city, and more specifically West
Modesto presents many areas for concern for individuals in the population. Altered nutrition,
more than body requirements is the first nursing diagnosis for Modesto. Nearly 72.4% of
individuals ages 18-49 are considered obese (County Health Calculator, 2014). Signs and
symptoms include weight 20% over ideal for height, dysfunctional eating patterns, eating for
other reasons than hunger, excessive intake related to caloric needs, and a sedentary lifestyle.
Another concern for this community is risk for respiratory complications related to poor air
quality. Since Stanislaus County scored an F in air quality, it plays an important role in the
populations respiratory health (Stanislaus County Health Services Agency, 2011). Signs and
symptoms of respiratory complications include wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, trouble
breathing, and inability to engage in physical activity. Because 36.8% of the population in West
Modesto was below poverty level in the year 2009, this population is at risk for the inability to
identify, manage or seek help to maintain health (City-Data, 2009). This is very important as
homeless and others living below poverty tend to not have access to as many resources as
someone who lives above poverty levels. Signs and symptoms include failure to keep scheduled
appointments, failure to respond to important symptoms regarding health status, and inability to
follow instructions. As a nurse it is important to be aware of the community and areas
surrounding the community in order to better serve the population. In looking at the cities data
on health concerns, demographics and statuses, nurses can provide the best care possible.
