Assignment
Create a COLOR JOURNAL and Process Book
Objective
To create familiarity, awareness, and skill at identifying classic Color Systems in professional
work; to improve craft and color mixing skills.
Materials
9 x 12 black, spiral sketchbook, Hard cover, (front & back), assorted pencils, gouache paint,
brushes, ruler, tape, water container, palette, assorted magazines, packaging, printed labels
Specifications
Identify the following classic Color

Monochromatic

Analogous

Complementary

Split Complementary

Double Complements

Designers Color Manual, Chapter 1
INCLUDE:
Introduction/TITLE page: Your name, class title, etc.
Procedure
1.
Found Art:
Magazines, printed material, Internet ads, cut & paste
2.
Select 2 examples each for color schemes 1-3 above; tape into Color Journal
3.
On the facing page of your journal, with gouache paint, re-create this palette with
inventive shapes and designs: Name the hues, Identify the color scheme
4.
You can choose to:
Paint directly in your journal, or, paint on another surface, and paste into journal
5.
This is your reference work, your journal; make it personal, make it creative
NOTE:
6.
This is a lab class: You should have this journal with you for EVERY CLASS meeting
for working in class and for regular progress reports with me.
7.
EXTRA CREDIT:
Only available after initial grading
For every color palette that you identify and paint with gouache, on the same page:
also paint the same palette with Acrylic soft body paint.
You must re-create all the color palettes with acrylic to receive the extra credit.
