LEADERSHIP PLAN

Outline for Personal Leadership Development Plan

Personal Statement
I strive to be a well-rounded practitioner who shines through diverse talents and skills
that are shared through compassionate care of the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual
domains encompassed in each fellow human being that I will encounter as patients and clients
throughout my career.
Mission and Vision Statement
I envision a future in which occupational therapy practitioners will have the freedom to
think outside the box and effect change in individual clients, job settings, organizations, national
climate, and international scenes in order to bring about overall inner peace, and inspire all
fellow human beings to push through challenges, overcome barriers, and succeed in their
physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual recovery. My mission is to campaign for the growth
and recognition of occupational therapy as an evidenced based profession in as many settings as
possible and at all levels so as to make our services widely available to all and increase quality of
life for every individual who desires it regardless of their personal circumstances.
Strengths:
The Gallup Strengths Finder assessment revealed that my five top strengths are as
follows: 1) futuristic, 2) strategic, 3) ideation, 4) intellection, and 5) achiever.
As a futuristic person my mind naturally gravitates towards envisioning and planning my
future. This is the way I inspire and motivate myself to do the work that is presently in front of
me in order to get me from the here, where I currently stand, to the there, where I truly want
to be. My futuristic approach to life guides what I do today so I can achieve my goals in the
future. Being strategic translates into good problem solving skills and having a plan that has been

LEADERSHIP PLAN

laid out in advance to guide the systematic pursuit of my goals and their attainment within a set
time frame. Additionally, as a true strategic professional, I not only plan for the expected, but I
also anticipate possible obstacles by formulating several alternative courses of action. This
allows me to circumvent obstacles smoothly to continue along my path with minimal delays and
little likelihood that I will either become discouraged or give up.
Ideation is another strength that I possess and which manifests in a fascination with ideas
and an ability to tie loose ends and connect thoughts together. Because I am so comfortable
playing with different ideas I can then be open to novel ways of thinking and think outside the
box with ease and on the spot. Strong intellection skills means that I enjoy bouncing off ideas
and ways of thinking with others, which makes me well suited for interdisciplinary discussions
and brain storming during team work with other practitioners. My last strength of being an
achiever is evident in my unusual high level of stamina and motivation to work for long extended
hours. I can focus on my work with little need for breaks and at times I become so engrossed that
hours will go by with me hardly noticing.
Growth Needs:
The very same strengths aforementioned are also in a way, weaknesses. If not well
managed and balanced, these same traits I just discussed can hinder progress rather than promote
it. For instance, being strategic means that at times I might overanalyze and spend too much time
focusing on issues that are not really relevant. Also, the strength of ideation has, at times, been a
weakness for me. This is because I value my ideas so much, that I might become reticent to share
them if I perceive that others will attack them with negative judgements. Additionally, if I spend
too much time around people I might feel socially burned-out and crave for solitude so I can
do what individuals high in the ideation trait enjoy most: ponder about the ideas in my mind

LEADERSHIP PLAN

uninterrupted. Being an achiever also means that at times I am at risk for getting burned out due
to overworking. My ongoing drive to accomplish things also results in being less social than
others because I tend to view socializing as interfering with my goals by taking time away from
getting work accomplished.
Leadership Model and/or Style Selected:
Each of my statements mentioned here, namely, my personal, mission, and vision
statements best align with the style of the servant leader because my main interest is to help
those who I will be treating, live their lives to their fullest and achieve better quality of life. Even
if I were to take a role in an organization such as the American Organization of Occupational
Therapists (AOTA), become a spokesperson, or develop my own research, ultimately, my aim
and motivation in accomplishing these things is to create a more fair would in which clients
receive the best possible health care services. I prefer to the kind of leader that walks side by side
with those I am leading rather than the leader that walks ahead for the crowds to follow.
