Rachmans Fear Acquisition Theory

The strength of the fear is determined by the number of repetitions of the association between
the pain/fear experience and the stimuli, and also by the intensity of the fear or pain
experienced in the presence of the stimuli. Stimuli resembling the fear-evoking ones also acquire
fearful properties i.e. they become secondary CSs. the likelihood of fear developing is increased
by frequent repetition of the association between the new CS and the pain/fear. It was proposed
further that once objects or situations acquire fear-provoking qualities, they develop motivating
properties, i.e. a secondary fear drive emerges. Behaviour; patterns such as avoidance actions,
which successfully reduce fear, increases in strength.
