Summary

The Irish government is


parliamentary democracy. The
laws are based on the
Common Law and legislation
by the Irish Parliament. The
European Union also sets
regulations for the force of law
in Ireland. The government is
regulated fundamentally by
the Constitution of Ireland.

President
The President is referred to
as the Head of State. The
President must be older
than 35 years old. They
serve a seven-year term
and can only be elected
twice. He/She must work
closely with the Council of
State to make any big
decisions.

of the government or the
Prime Minister of Ireland.
He/she is appointed by the
president after a
nomination of Dail Eireann.

This is the Taoiseachs right had man. They are the second
most senior officer in the government and aid the Taoiseach
in any major decisions. They are appointed by the President
under the advice of the Taoiseach.

Court System:
The court system in made up of four main courts in Ireland;
District Court, Circuit Court, High Court and Supreme Court.
The District Court deals with minor and criminal charges.
The Circuit Court works with more serious civil and criminal
charges. The High Court handles more serious civil and
criminal cases, such as murder. A President of the High
Court presides over these cases. The Supreme Court was
created for the final court of appeals. The Chief Justice
presides over these cases.
