AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

At the end of this presentation

We will have the basic knowledge of fire.
Know the causes of fire.
At a glance classify all fire.
Know the different types of fire fighting
agents.
Differentiate between prevention,
protection, and fire fighting.

INTRODUCTION
SAFETY MUST BE TOP DRIVEN.
ROLE OF MANAGEMENT.
ROLE OF WOKERS.

DEFINITIONS
SAFETY
Absolute freedom from the harm of
any hazard.

FIRE.
Defined as rapid chemical
combination of three
main components.

CHEMISTRY OF FIRE

HEAT
OXYGEN

FIRE PREVENTION
The science and engineering of putting all
structures in place with the view of
combating every BIG fire to a small one
and every SMALL fire to be extinguished.
This includes automatic fire installations to
detect, alert, and actuate fire fighting
agents. It is also the training of personnel
to practice online safety while in
operations and maintenance

FIRE PROTECTION
The technical selection of FIRE
RETARDANT materials right from
design stage. The whole structure
including paints, ceilings, and doors
are fire resistant. The electrical
loadings are well and correctly
scheduled.

CLASSES OF FIRE
CLASS A
Fire originating from things that burn
freely in the air. These are papers,
woods, textiles, plastics etc.

CLASS B
Liquid hydrocarbon fires, like petrol,
diesel, kerosene and cooking oils.

CLASS C
Fire from gaseous hydrocarbons. Like
methane, ethane, propane and
butane. Combination of these gasses
is LPG or cooking gas.

CLASS D
Fires from metals and metallic
compounds. Very reactive metals like
sodium, potassium, calcium and
compounds like tri-ethyl-aluminium
(TEA).

ELECTRICAL FIRE
Classified by America as CLASS E,
while Europe has no class for it.
The most important action is to
ISOLATE the supply to the place on
fire.

SECONDARY CAUSES
COMMON CAUSES: Accidents and
