Busting the Myth

Upcoming Events

Your career isnt determined by your

major
While your major is important, your major
doesnt always correlate to what you will do
post-graduation. Liberal Arts & Human
Sciences students sometimes struggle trying to
figure out what career path to take, because
unlike majors like engineering, our major isnt
always in our future job title. The reality is that
liberal arts courses give students transferable
skills that can be used in a variety of
disciplines. For example, Human Development
majors are not restricted to education; the
coursework in psychology and experience
working with people can help them move into
human resources after graduation.

On the 20122013 Virginia Tech Post-Grad Report, 35% of

LAHS students consider their job to be very
related to their major, 42% consider it to be
somewhat related and 23% say its not
related. However, 64% of students responded
that their job is very related to their career
goals and the other 36% said that it was
somewhat related. 92% of graduates had
career-related experience prior to graduation.
These statistics show that overall, the work
that you do in your major isnt always exactly
related to your job after graduation, but you
are typically using some skills that you learned
in that program.
