Summative Assessment Data

According to the Unit Summative Assessment data above, out of the 20 students who took the
test, 100% passed. This data reflects a successful completion of the unit objective and extends to
show above and beyond concept comprehension. Out of the 20 students who took the test, 5 of
the students (25%) made a perfect 100. 8 students (40%) made an A (90-99), 4 students (20%)
made a B (80-89), and 3 students (15%) made a C. After looking back on my students
performance on the summative assessment, I am content with where their scores ranged.
Although my passing rate was at least a 70%, I am not completely at ease with students barely
getting by. The students who made Cs were the ones who were not paying as close attention as
the rest of the class and failed to ask themselves if some of their answers made sense. For
example, on the first question students were asked what a natural resource was. Two of my
students chose answer choice d. Although an animal is a type of natural resource, before my
students had taken the test, I explicitly explained to them that I was looking for the definition of
the word, natural resource. In fact, we had gone over almost the whole test before they had
taken it in order to get their brains juicing. But there are still students who fail to listen, even
after I review the instructions for a second time. There are some things that I would have
changed about the assessment. For example, there were some questions that I would have
reworded, like number one. I could have written out explicitly, The definition of a natural
resource is This way my students wouldnt have confused me asking for an example like they
had done. I was pleased with my open-ended question responses and liked how students were
able to add in creativity and their own opinions into some of their answers. An explicit
vocabulary section might have been helpful as well, but, overall, I feel as if the assessment did an
adequate job at assessing my students thoroughly.
