Some Shortcuts Rules in Multiplying

Numbers with Special Properties:

1. Multiplying Numbers between 10 and 20.
a. Multiply the unit digits. (If there are
two digits of the product bring down
the unit digit of the product and carry
the tens digit I lined with the unit
digits)
b. Cross out one of the Ones and add
the remaining numbers.
Example: 15 X 14
2
1 5
1 4
2 1 0
Multiply 5 and 4, the product is 20,
bring down 0, and carry 2 in lined with
the unit digits. After crossing one of
the ones, add 2, 15 and 4, the sum is
21 and it completes the multiplication.
2. Multiplying numbers between 100 and
110.
a. Multiply the unit digits, bring down
two digits, if there is only one digit
in the product add 0 to the left
side.
b. Add unit digits, bring down two
digits.
c. Multiply the hundreds digit.
Example: 105 x 107
1 0 5
1 0 7
1 1 2 3 5
Multiply 5 x 7 = 35
Add 5 + 7 = 12
Multiply 1 x 1 = 1
3. Squaring a two digit number that begins
with 5.
a. Multiply the unit digits bring down
two digits.
b. Add the unit digit to 25
Example 57 x 57
5 7
5 7
3 2 4 9
Multiply 7 x 7 = 49
Add 7 to 25 = 32

4. Multiply a two digit number with the

equal digits horizontally or vertically. (The
rule does not apply if the equal digits are
diagonal)
a. Multiply the unit digits, bring down
only one digit.
b. Add the non-equal digits and
multiply to one of the equal digits,
then add the carried number to the
product, bring down only one digit
of the result.
c. Multiply the tens digit, add the
carried number if any to the
product.
Example 65 x 63, note the same 6
in vertical position.

6 5
6 3
0 9 5
Multiply 5 x 3 = 15, bring down
5 and carry 1.
Add 5 + 3 = 8, multiply 8 x 6 =
48, add 48 + 1 = 49, bring
down 9 and carry 4.
Multiply 6 x 6 = 36, add 36 + 4
= 40

Example: 33 x 72, the same 3 in

horizontal position
2
3 3
7 2
2 3 7 6
1. Multiply 3 x 2 = 6, bring down 6
2. Add 7 + 2 = 9, multiply 9 x 3 =
27, no carried number to be
added so bring down 7, carry 2
3. Multiply 7 x 3 = 21, add 21 + 2
= 23
5. Multiplying a three digit number with
equal digits horizontally or vertically but
with medial 0.
a. Multiply the unit digits, bring down two
digits
b. Add the non-equal digits and multiply
to one of the equal digits, bring down
two digits.
c. Multiply the hundreds digit.
Example: 702 x 703

7 0 2
7 0 3
4 9 3 5 0 6
1. Multiply 2 x 3 = 6, since two digits
are required bring down 06.

2. Add 2 + 3 = 5, multiply 5 x 7 = 35
3. Multiply 7 x 7 = 49.
