Germanwings Flight 4U 9525 Co-Pilot


(Questions Worth Answering)

On 24 March 2015, a Germanwing aircraft (Flight 4U 9525) crashed in the


French Alps killing all 150 passengers and crew on board. After the black box
was found, it was discovered that Andreas Lubitz, a co-pilot on the flight,
deliberately crashed the flight. A couple of days later, it was reported that
Lubitz was suffering from depression.
The following pages are some of the headline news reported in the
mainstream papers.

QUESTIONS
If the Co-pilot had a "funny sounding name":

What would have been the headline news?

Would he have been called a terrorist or not?

iii.)

Would the media still be showing images of him jogging or sitting by a


bridge?

iv.)

What adjectives would the media have used to describe him?

v.)

Would the co-pilots race/ethnicity have mattered?

vi.)

Would the co-pilots religion be an issue?

vii.) What would the political class have to say?


viii.) Would immigration and multiculturalism have been put on the spotlight?
ix.)

Would the incident be treated as an isolated one?

x.)

Would there have been such a significant emphasis on his mental state?

xi.)

Would it have mattered that he had previously been treated by several


neurologists and psychiatrists?

xii.) What would have been the fate of other pilots with funny sounding
names?
xiii.) Would these pilots with funny sounding names be trusted to fly planes
going forward?

A stereotype is a lazy assessment of the other, a


sloppy projection of bias onto a vulnerable target.
