From the second-order nonlinear system we get

x 1
x 2

= x2 (1)
= -3 x12x2 - 6x2 x13 ( + 6) x1 (2)

(a) Investigate whether the origin of the state space is an equilibrium

point for all possible values of .
By the definition of the equilibrium point,
0 = x2e (3)
0 = -3 x1e2x2e - 6x2e x1e3 ( + 6) x1e (4)
On Substituting (3) in (4) we get
0 = - x1e3 ( + 6) x1e
x1e3 = ( + 6) x1e
x1e3 + x1e + 6 x1e = 0
x1e ( x1e2 + (6+ )) = 0
x1e = 0 (5)

x1e2 = -6 -
x1e2 =
x1e =

Therefore the equilibrium point is at = -6

(6)

(b) Investigate the number and value of equilibria for -6 < < 0

We know that x1e =

1
5

If = -5

x1e =

If = -4

x1e =

If = -3

x1e =

If = -2

x1e =

If = -1

x1e =

1
2

And hence there are 5 equilibrium points.

(c) Investigate the stability of all equilibria above, by linearization
around a neighborhood of each equilibrium point
In order to investigate the stability we need to linearize the non-linear
system.
To linearize the system consider,
x

= a(x, u)

Since

x =

Where,

x =

then,

A x + B u which is the first-order Taylor series expansion.

x = x - xe
u = u ue

(d) Investigate the behavior of the system for = - 6

On substituting = -6 we get only single equilibrium point (i.e) 0, or in
other words the origin of the state space. And therefore it is an
autonomous system for = -6

(e) Conclusions
For = -6 we get the origin at the state space and has an initial condition
x(0)= xe , therefore the system will remain there for all time. And if
value lies in between -6 and 0 the possible equilibrium points have been
specified.
