Dear Editor:
I am contacting on behalf of the University of Northern Iowa. The university is one of three state
colleges in Iowa and is under the administration of President William Ruud. We have recently
received a special appropriation of $18 million and intend on using the money to offer financial
aid to students in need, especially minority students. In recent years, the university has been
facing an issue similar to several other institutions: minority enrollment is falling behind. We
want to increase the enrollment by four percent and plan to use this scholarship fund to do so.
The state legislature has approved this appropriation and the University of Northern Iowa is the
only college in Iowa to receive it. The Youth Opportunity Unlimited (YOU) financial aid
program provides up to $6,000 per academic semester to qualifying in-state residents and will
begin starting in the fall of 2015. The money can be used towards tuition, room and board, books
and other specified expenses.
Although this scholarship is for all in-state residents, applications for minority in-state residents
are particularly encouraged. With the use of the new scholarship program at UNI, we can assist
as many as 2,000 incoming freshman. In order to apply, students must meet the eligibility
requirements listed in the packet.
To apply, contact the university through a recruiter or Gilchrist Hall at (319) 273-6857. There is
more information about the University of Northern Iowa and the scholarship programs online at
http://www.uni.edu/finaid/scholarship. Applications are due no later than March 15 of the year
students plan to enroll.

Sincerely,
Morgan Thias
