LESSON #7- PLANT SCIENCE

I. Topic/Grade Level:
Plant Science
K-3 Special Education
Science
II. Standards:
Physical Sciences
K.1- Properties of materials can be observed, measured, and predicted. As a basis for understanding this concept:
a. Students know objects can be described in terms of the materials they are made of (e.g., clay, cloth,
paper) and their physical properties (e.g., color, size, shape, weight, texture, flexibility, attraction
to magnets, floating, sinking).
Life Sciences
K.2. Differen types of plants and animals inhabit the earth. As a basis for understanding this concept:
a. Students know how to observe and describe similarities and differences in the appearance and behavior of
plants and animals (e.g., seed-bearing plants, birds, fish, insects).
b. Students know stories sometimes give plants and animals attributes they do not really have.
c. Students know how to identify major structures of common plants and animals (e.g., stems, leaves, roots,
arms, wings, legs).
Investigation and Experimentation
K.4. Scientific progress is made by asking meaningful questions and conducting careful investigations. As a basis
for understanding this concept and addressing the content in the other three strands, students should develop
their own questions and perform investigations. Students will:
a. Observe common objects by using the five senses.
b. Describe the properties of common objects.
c. Describe the relative position of objects by using one reference (e.g., above or below).
d. Compare and sort common objects by one physical attribute (e.g., color, shape, texture, size, weight).
e. Communicate observations orally and through drawings. Creativity and innovationStudents

2
demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and
and processes using technology.

III. Goals and Student Learning Outcomes:

Goal 1: Students will understand the basic science of seeds
Student Learning Outcome 1: Students will examine their own lima bean seed
Student Learning Outcome 2: Students will discuss and share ideas about how a seed
becomes a plant
Goal 2: Students will plant a seed
Student Learning Outcome 1: Students will follow directions from a parent helper
to properly plant a seed
Student Learning Outcome 2: Students will learn basics of how to care for a plant
IV. Learning Environment(s):
This lesson will take place face-to-face in the classroom
V. Resources:

https://youtu.be/bOPHCvLDDZ0 (how plants grow)
Supplies necessary for planting a seed- clear plastic cups, potting soil, bean seeds, small watering can
App-Gro Garden
App- My First Words (Deluxe)

VI. Diversity / Differentiation:

This class is a moderate/severe SDC class with students ranging from kindergarten
through 3rd grade. The lesson has been fully adapted to meet the needs of all learners. The
information is projected on the large screen so it is easy for all students to see. The students are
divided into small groups with classroom aides to assist in the assignment to examine and plant seeds.
For those unable to write, the Speech Notes App will be available. Also for non-verbal students who
are also unable to write, the App Proloquo2Go will be available to assist the students with the
assignment.
VII.

Technology Inclusion:
The Elmo projector will be used to show the YouTube video. IPads and the Apps Gro
Garden and My First Words (Delux) will be used for the small group instruction.

VIII. Prior Knowledge: Prior to this lesson, students have: learned about farm animals, dairy
farms, vegetables, and plants that grow above or below the ground.
Lesson Placement in the Unit: This is lesson _7_ of _10__.

3
IX. Procedures:
1. Lesson Introduction / Anticipatory Set:
Students are brought to the rug and asked:
How does a plant begin?
Ask students for thoughts and predictions.
How does a seed turn into a plant?
Tell them that scientists make predictions and study things to find answers to
their questions.
Show the following video How plants grow(created by Danielle Phillips)
https://youtu.be/bOPHCvLDDZ0
Today you are going to be a scientist.
2. Direct Instruction:
Activity:
Give each student a seed, lima bean, that has been soaked in water so it is easier to
open. Show them how to open the seeds carefully. (They fall apart, so you must be
gentle!) Ask students to see if they can find out how a seed turns into a plant.
After looking on their own, have them help friends find out why. Have them talk
about it with their groups as they look. Make sure every child sees a baby plant.
Back to rug for discussion: Show the short YouTube video with song about
planting a seed (link listed above). Have the children sing it several times with the
actions.
3. Student Interaction with lesson content / Guided Practice:
Divide students into two groups. The first group will be planting seeds with
parent helpers. The second group will be using Apps- My First Words (Delux) to
practice spelling farm related vocabulary words, and Gro Garden to practice the
steps for caring for seeds and plants.
4. Review / Closure: (reflection)
Video journal prompt: Do you think your seed will grow? How big?

X. Evaluation/Assessment:
1. Identify formative and summative assessment of student engagement, homework, media
presentations. Include rubrics, or other forms of assessment.
