Carbohydrate ID Lab- Inquiry approach

1) For Honors level: have students break into three groups to research
the three classes of carbohydrates (mono-, di-, and poly-). They
present and share information with each other. For CP and Academic
levels: explain the three classes of carbohydrates (creation of a
foldable is an option)
2) Give students a list of food items, ask students: How do I find out if
these foods are monosaccharide, disaccharide, or polysaccharide?
3) Give students the following information about indicator solutions:
a. Benedicts solution
i. Show students the solution and its blue color
ii. Heat needs to be applied to show a reaction
iii. If there is a reaction, the solution will turn green and then
orange
iv. Only 1 ml (or a full pipette is needed for a reaction)
b. Iodine
i. Show students the solution and its amber/gold color
ii. Heat does not need to be applied to show a reaction
iii. If there is a reaction, the solution will turn purple/black
c. ** BOTH SOLUTIONS MUST BE USED **
4) Ask the question again: How do I find out if these foods are
monosaccharide, disaccharide, or polysaccharide?
5) If they are inquiring or are struggling you can feed them another piece
of information by telling the students you have available three
chemicals: dextrose (a monosaccharide), sucrose (a disaccharide), and
corn starch (a polysaccharide)
