Description of Activities and Setting

What does it mean to compare and contrast?
Today you are going to learn about how to compare
and contrast two characters from a novel by describing
their similarities and differences. When we are finished
you will be able to compare and contrast any characters
in your independent reading books
Authors create relationships between characters,
settings, and events by developing the interactions
among the story elements.(conditional) Good readers
can identify the relationships between story elements
by comparing and contrasting them.(declarative) When
you compare two or more things, you find ways they
are alike. When you contrast two or more things, you
find ways they are different.(procedural). * When you
compare you are finding how they are similar and when
you are contrasting you are finding how they are
different. Using a venn diagram can help you
understand how two things are alike and how they are
different. I am going to show on a venn diagram how to
compare and contrast using specific details that I know
about each holiday so that you can see the process of

comparing and contrasting. [Answers:July 4th and

Thanksgiving. Similarities: Eat a lot of food, celebrate
America, and it is a nationally celebrated holiday.
Differences: One is in July and the other is in
November, fireworks for July 4th, and the traditional
meal is turkey.
We are going to read the paragraph from the paper I
have given you. Then, we will be using a venn diagram
to identify the similarities and differences. Use specific
details to compare and contrast Logan and Jake.
