This report describes the students learning progress based on provincial learning expectations for each grade level. It is intended to
inform parents about learning successes and to guide improvement efforts when needed.
SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
It is a pleasure to have K as a member of our grade 5/6 class this year. Her positive, helpful attitude is always appreciated, not only by me, but also by
her peers. Her willingness to participate in class discussions and contribute to the betterment of the class and the school community through her
positive actions does not go unnoticed. Thank you for a great term K!

K is a strong reader and reads a variety of novels. She is able to choose

novels she knows she will be able to read successfully. During our silent
reading time she is actively engaged with her novel and is always on task. I
would like us to start working on choosing books that provide a greater
challenge for her reading level and introduce her to new ideas.

Writing is an area of strength for K. Her writing is usually clear and easy to

follow. She accompanies writing assignments with relevant, detailed

examples from her life. Her creative writing is also very vivid and
imaginative. Ks spelling and punctuation has also improved since last
reporting period. I would challenge K to expand on her writing and
continue to work on her use of paragraphs.

Ks speaking and listening nicely complement each other when interacting

and sharing ideas in whole class discussions, small groups or pairs. During
buddy reading she is able to engage with her little buddy with appropriate
check for understanding questions. This ability shows that she understands
what she is hearing and is able to support her buddy. K is always able to stay
on task and encourage others in her group to do so during discussions.

K knows her basic math facts including addition, subtraction, multiplication,

and division. Math is a part of the curriculum that challenges K. In the
upcoming semester we will be tackling some more advanced concepts but I
urge her to continue with her unwavering perseverance. It is clear that K
works hard at her math skills and with this work ethic the more challenging
concepts will come to her with practice.

This term in Social Studies we have been learning about Global

Citizenship and what it means to be a global citizen. Ks work throughout
the term demonstrated that she had a strong grasp of the material and is
successfully meeting the learning outcomes. I especially enjoyed the
poster she made to represent one of the basic human rights.

Our focus this semester in Science was on Simple Machines. Ks work

during this unit demonstrated her strong understanding of all six basic
simple machines. The art project in which she invented a compound
machine demonstrated that she understands how simple machines work
together to create a compound machine. I encourage K to continue her
excellent work in science.

Art is without a doubt an area of strength and a passion of Ks. I

absolutely love seeing the artistic creations she makes on a weekly basis.
I especially liked her most recent mosaic piece of the giraffe. I do not
doubt that K will continue this excellent work, I encourage her to inspire
this love of art in the other students in the class.

This term both K and I saw her badminton skills improve. This goes to
show that when K is engaged and focused in P.E. class she is able to
attain the skills. I encourage K is continue to put her best effort forward
in P.E. and to not be nervous to ask for help when she needs it. I will
continue to support K in her acquisition of new skills.

This term in HACE we have been doing a school wide anti-bullying this
program. This program involved teaching the students about many
different skills and tools they can use at school and in life to deal with
situations that might involve bully like behaviours. K was able to
demonstrate, through class discussions and role-plays, that she
understands what bullying is, what it looks like and how to deal with it.

K always works hard to follow class directions and makes sure to ask
others and read directions before asking for help. She is very self aware
and is able to manage her body and behaviours. She is able to
consistently stay on task and help those around her to do the same. She is
a positive influence in our classroom!
COMMENTS/WAYS TO SUPPORT LEARNING:
To support Ks further learning we will work towards providing her with
more challenge in the area of Language Arts. In the upcoming term there
will also be more opportunities for K to act as a peer helper, which would
be a great opportunity for her to solidify her own learning. In the area of
math I will continue to provide her with as much one on one support as
possible, there are also many resources on my website which can be
accessed from home that would help to provide K with additional
support.
