Overview
The word to guess is represented by a row of dashes, giving the number of letters, numbers
and category. If the guessing player suggests a letter or number which occurs in the word, the
other player writes it in all its correct positions. If the suggested letter or number does not
occur in the word, the other player draws one element of a hanged man stick figure as a tally
mark. The game is over when:
The guessing player completes the word, or guesses the whole word correctly
This diagram is, in fact, designed to look like a hanging man. Although debates have arisen
about the questionable taste of this picture,[1] it is still in use today. A common alternative for
teachers is to draw an apple tree with ten apples, erasing or crossing out the apples as the
guesses are used up.
The exact nature of the diagram differs; some players draw the gallows before play and draw
parts of the man's body (traditionally the head, then the torso, then the arms and legs one by
one). Some players begin with no diagram at all, and drawing the individual elements of the
gallows as part of the game, effectively giving the guessing players more chances. The
amount of detail on the man can also vary, affecting the number of chances. Some players
include a face on the head, either all at once or one feature at a time.
Some modifications to game play to increase difficulty level are sometimes implemented,
such as limiting guesses on high-frequency consonants and vowels. Another alternative is to
give the definition of the word. This can be used to facilitate the learning of a foreign
language.
Derivations
The game show Wheel of Fortune is based on Hangman, but with the addition of a roulettestyled wheel and cash is awarded for each letter.

WHAT'S NEEDED TO PLAY: A pencil and some paper are needed to play the game. A
clipboard is also a handy hard surface to play on.
SETUP: Either print out some pre-prepared hangman pages or draw a simple gallows and
write out the alphabet above or below the gallows. To save time you can print out one of
these hangman pages:
Hangman 1 Page : Includes to games per page with gallows, alphabet, and dotted
figure of a person for the executioner to outline as the game progresses.
Hangman 2 Page : Same as hangman 1 except without the dotted figure of a stick
person person.
HOW TO PLAY: Choose one person to be the executioner. That person will think of a word
or short phrase an mark out blanks (short lines) for each letter of each word. Separate words
with either a slash, a fairly wide gap, or place words on separate lines. Then another player
will guess a letter. If that letter is in the word(s) then write the letter in everywhere it would
appear, an cross out that letter in the alphabet. If the letter isn't in the word then add a body
part to the gallows (head, body, left arm, right arm, left leg, right leg). The player will
continue guessing letters until they can either solve the word (or phrase) or all six body parts
are on the gallows.
TO WIN: The executioner wins if the full body is hanging from the gallows. The guesser(s)
wins if they guess the word before the person is hung.
HANGMAN EXAMPLE:
Here is an example of a hangman game in progress. The phrase is Happy Birthday, so 5 blank
spaces were marked out for Happy, and below that 8 blank space were marked out for
birthday. Three correct guesses were made: A, R and T. Three incorrect guesses were made:
S, E, and M. Three body parts were added for the 3 incorrect guesses.
