Literacy Activity 1
Activity title: Letter Tumble Game (Lower and Upper Case Alphabet)
Literacy concepts addressed: Alphabet knowledge and Print Awareness
Literacy skills addressed: Identify some/all letters in print by name, Identify lower and
uppercase letters in print, match lowercase to uppercase letters using one-to-one
correspondence.
Integrated content area(s): Alphabet knowledge and Comprehension the child (ren)
will be able to recognize and match uppercase and lowercase letters, and match the
sounds to letters correctly.
Integrated content area concepts: Math (Comparison, Sorting, Numbers and
Operations, and Geometry)
Integrated content area skills: Understanding that letters have different shapes (curves,
straight lines, zig - zag, etc.). Comparing big and little (uppercase and lowercase),
sorting and matching letters accordingly using one-to-one-correspondence and
counting letters from 1 26.
Materials:
Letter Tumble Grid with Uppercase Alphabet Letters
Cards with Lowercase Alphabet Letters
Tray/Container
Summary of activity: Child will place the uppercase letter grid in the tray or on a table,
and then remove the lowercase cards from the bag. The child will look at the grid and
identify the uppercase alphabet letter and sound it out, and then will search through
the lowercase alphabet cards to find the matching letter. The child will then place the
card on the grid using one-to-one correspondence. Finally the child will count all of the
letters of the alphabet.

Literacy Activity 2
Activity title: Rhyming Match Game (Phonological Awareness)
Literacy concepts addressed: Phonological and Print Awareness (Listening, rhyming,
beginning sounds, ending sounds, repetition, pictures (print) and phonemes.)
Literacy skills addressed: Listening to rhyming words with the same beginning and/or
ending sounds, recognizing and naming pictures, repetition and phonemes
(segmenting and blending words together.)
Integrated content area(s): Listening for beginning sounds in familiar words, pointing to
pictures and identifying objects, recognizing words that sound the same, identifying
which words have the same beginning and/or ending sounds, comprehending words
that sound alike and have the same beginning and/or ending sounds and segmenting
and blending to sound out the words. Discriminate sounds that are the same and
different.
Integrated content area concepts: Math (Sorting, Matching, Comparing, Numbers and
Operations)
Integrated content area skills: Identifying pictures relating to words to sort and apply
(match) the pictures with words that sound alike. Comparing the words and counting
the number of letters in each word.
Materials:
Rhyming Match Game Grids (1-3 sets)
Cards to match rhyming words (1-3 sets)
Tray/Container
Answer key for self-checking
Summary of activity: Child will place tray/ container on the floor or table and place the
rhyming match game grid on the table. The child will remove the rhyming cards from
the bag to sort and match. Then the child will look at the picture; identify what it is by
saying and sounding it out. The child will then sort through the rhyming cards and sound
out the words out according to the picture to discriminate the sounds. Once the child
has figured out which rhyming word card relates to the rhyming match grid, the child
will then place the card on the correct picture.
